  • Trying to create DPV FMVs in Darkplaces

    Hello all,

None of the other discussion sections seemed to be about MOD help specifically, so I came here to post my question.

I am trying to create FMVs for a mod, and am using the Darkplaces quake engine. It says in documentation that it supports 'dpv video' which I assume is a type of preprietary video format.

My question is, how do I make an avi into a dpv? I have found literally NO documentation on this subject, and if there is, I would much appreciate any help.

    Thank you all!

Not too sure if this would help but something to look into. While looking at the files page on the Darkplaces site I found:
    http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplac...eo20070925.zip
has a encoder, player, decoder and a "simple player". I haven't opened any of these yet as I don't have any dpv videos - however I imagine these could help you out.

      Aha!

Played around with it a bit and got a custom video playing back just fine, The video quality is also pretty great all things considered. Much better than RoQ.

Thanks for the tools ooppee, much appreciated!

As a side note, what types of file sizes would you say would be pretty offensive in terms of cgi FMVs for a mod? I know back in the quake2 days those video files were a bit outrageous, 200mb range for a 3 minute clip. I wouldn't do anything over a minute though.

Well Q2 was still in the "early days" of true 3d FPS'. Back then a 5gb harddrive was big. Today we have terrabyte harddrives. So I would say the filesize of 200mb is fine. It will however reduce the amount of downloaders though (filesize turns some away). I'd aim for 100mb tops per video and keep the mod under 1gb.
