  • Grimrock Death Effect for SMC

    Hello all,
    I decided to give this it's own thread.

    I was wanting the Grimrock effect for all monsters in Quake after seeing the experiment Seven posted not too long ago. I asked Seven to assist me and he sent me his source code and some instructions. Under his guidance I've compiled the QC to give the effect to all monsters other than the tarbaby and the fish. I think this effect wouldn't fit the fish and the tarbaby has a nice effect already. I thought it would be nice to share it with the rest of you. The zip includes the code (progs.dat in QC folder) and some nice Zombie skins for their effect. Just copy the progs.dat and Zombie-Trinity-skins.pk3 into your Id1 folder. SMC by Seven is needed for this to work and it's for DP only.

    All I did was follow the instructions that Seven provided and gave some time. Seven fixed the mistakes I made in trying to learn some minor coding. All credit goes to Seven and Nahuel for these effects. Be sure to shoot a wizard in the air and watch the particles rain down.

    i'm having a problem, i compiled the progs.dat and when i load the game, i get no sparks only the monsters vanish.

    did you need to add your effectinfo for the monster effects?

            That would be great if you could do it. I'm thinking of getting Fraps but haven't yet. I like this effect for a change now and then.

            Yes, Seven and Nahuel did an excellent job with the effect and Seven has done an even better job at getting me to understand some code! It really looks nice with the detail from your particlefont.

            If you haven't tried it guys, give it a shot..I think you'll like it even if just for an occaisonal change! Be sure to download the effectinfo from above that I forgot to put in the initial link.

            Here is a new link with the effect in a nice SMC pk3 and the zombie skins. The effectinfo is in the pk3. Hopefully much less confusion.

              Gdiddy, I downloaded them seperately and just stuffed it into the pk3 file about 2 YouTube up some goodies har har

                Woah, suppose their is a first time for everything.....

                DarkPlaces + Crossfire = Broken ass video recordings... It seems I'll have to run off 1 gpu while recording, will fix later / reupload the video... for now, I Rage - deleted it because of its insane jitters in the video.

                    hey gdiddy,

                    just tried it after you asked me to check it out and test it for you, and im actually quite surprised at this effect. i didnt like it to much from seeing the vids and such seven posted before, but the effect is actually pretty damn awesome!

                    especially for the fiends i think this effect rules! its so cool to have a fiend jump for you and then suddenly seeing only cynders flying in your face if you blow the fiend up in mid-air, that looks so awesome!

                    for the zombies its a pretty cool and kind-of fitting effect too imo

                    and for scrags its pretty awesome too, that when you kill them they suddenly turn to dust and you see a bunch of glowing ash fall down from where the scrag was

                    and for the deathknights its kinda cool too

                    for grunts, enforcers and dogs the effect seems unfitting imo though,
                    since they are just humans and their pets and not monsters from another dimension


                    only suggestions id maybe would make is try making the spread of the particles bigger, and perhaps try increasing the time the glowing ash remains on the ground, its way to short imo. try making it last something like 10-15 seconds before it fades away

                    oh, and also something i noticed... for the shambler it doesnt look good at all, cuz it has the same size particles as the rest of the mosnters. perhaps try to change it for the shambler so that the particles for him are bigger, and the point from which the particles spawn is a lot higher. cuz right now it looks like the particles poof out of his balls XD
                    and imo it feels totally out of place and feels like a very unfitting death for the shambler, to have this big huge massive monster just poof into some particles when he dies



                    but except for that the effect is totally awesome, and i would love to have this effect as option for scrag, fiend and zombie and hellknight
                    and id love it if you made it just like smc has, so that when these enemies die that randomly one of all of the death effects is used.
                    although for the fiend id totally want this effect to always happen, its just to fucking awesome to see them suddenly burn up in glowing ash in the middle of a jump


                    (btw sorry for the numerous times i edited this post but i kept wanting to add more all the time )

                      would be totally awesome if you could make that gdiddy!

                      if you'd add this effect for scrag, deathknight, zombie to the list of randomly chosen death-effects, and add that the fiend optionally always uses this effect

                      could you perhaps make that for me gdiddy?

                      and for the rest of the monsters keep it like the smc normally has, with the 3 death-effects seven made at random.
                      or perhaps add an extra option so that you can pick wether to only use sevens 3 effects at random, or sevens effects plus yours all at random

                        Thanks for the feedback. I thought that what Seven and Nahuel achieved really rocks! I agree that it is cool when your being attacked and backing up to suddenly have only ashes in your face. And I've loved the scrag particles raining down from the beginning! This with the particles effects from Jakub's effectinfo, particlefont details from Sean's latest release and this is supreme IMO.

                        It is my intent to incorporate all of your suggestions into the next release as they were noticed by Seven and myself. The intent is to make everything adjustable via cvar. I agree that the particles for the shambler need to be over a much larger area and the spawn point for them needs to be adjusted.

                        Please be patient as Seven is letting me do this and I'm literally learning code on the run so to speak.

                              erm... did you two even open the rar?

                              cuz if you did you wouldve seen that an already compiled progs.dat is included in it

                              gdiddy even put them in easy-to-use pk3s
