  • Free Games: Warsow, Nexuiz, Cube

Has anyone tried Warsow, Nexuiz, Cube or other free and open source FPS games?

If so, what did you think about them?

By the way, there is a new Cube 2 released very recently called Sauerbraten by Aardappel ... who used to make maps for Quake.

I tried Nexuiz but I couldn't get my underpowered video card (GeForce2) to run it very well and it seemed like the servers that had players didn't have the greatest ping for me.

Hydro was in love with Nexuiz, maybe he still is. I know a fair number of players that tried it out.

This Nexuiz map I always thought looked outstanding:

Nexuiz is based on the DarkPlaces engine (it's actually the same exe as DarkPlaces), Warsow is Quake 2 based and I'm not really sure about Cube/Cube2.

    And a Warsow shot:

Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Currently, my time is being spent playing Gunz which I highly suggest. Not exactally FPS, but as close as a Third-Person shooter could get. (The jumps and wallruns and other cool stuff wouldnt be NEARLY as cool in First-Person.

I'll have to try some of the above.

Sauerbraten is an original design by Aardappel.
Visit his website for more insight in the eclectic work of Wouter van Oortmerssen. Coding, mapping, visual experiences...
His Quake pages are also a good way to start. Lots of dead links though...

They are Cube and Sauer versions for OSX!
You can easily skip Cube and head for Sauerbraten.
You'll find everything Cube in Sauer (aka Cube 2) in much better.
Game is fluid, fun to play, stable...

Worth also the look is Death Illustrated, a standalone game based on Cube.
Get it for Cursesandepithets or Freewarebeast

'Death Illustrated - Deathmatching inside a three dimensional comic book'

Some Sauerbraten mods, such as the sexy Sopo [my own taste here ] and Vector-X where removed from Quadropolis, home of Cube mapping, modding, and mayhem, due to copyright infringement.

Nexuiz 1.2 for OSX, on my Dual MDD 1.25 GeForce4 Ti 4600 128 was laggy as hell.
I'll give a try to Nexuiz 2.0 on my Pentium D3.2 GeForce 7900 GTX 512 and come back for a review!

Never heard about Warsow. Server is actually down for maintenance...

[EDIT:] Nexuiz 2.0 is really better now. Stable, all settings full on my PC. Runs smoothly. Good visuals, challenging bots...
Only downside to my taste: tacky sounds! In Sauerbraten, sounds are tacky as well but they match the bots style, ah ah!
Warsow: no SP ladder but I loaded some maps manually. No lag, great visuals. I bet this one must be fun MP!

I haven't played around with Warsow much at all.

Nexuiz is fun. It's unpolished but slowly gaining polish. Nexuiz 2.0 is essential because it's a million times faster than previous versions.

Cube/Sauerbraten is aardappel's programming project. Simple engines and games whose main feature are real-time in-game level editing. It's really cool, check it out. They also support a basic FPS game including online play and also including multiplayer level editing

Tremulous is another free game, a Q3 mod that went standalone when the Q3 source was released. It's quite polished and consistent art-wise, and a pretty fun game. Basically a ripoff of Natural Selection but with the RTS element removed.

cube was just horrible. im not sure if i was able to change the controls but i remember having some standard liberty being taken away from me. that, and the gameplay was unappealing overall

I love Nexuiz. It runs quite fast if you turn off all that so called "eye candy". There are far better looking maps than on the screenshot Baker posted. Weapon balance and the movement are kind of a problem though.

Warsow is a Q2 engine game with the emphasis on movement and fast-paced action. It has been compared to CPMA on more than a few occasions.

Visually, the team is aiming for a gritty cartoon-ish feel, while still trying to remain serious. The team is aso actively thinking about the potential that the game has for e-sports.

16:03:30 <gb> the fact that only playtesting tells me that probably means that my mind is a sieve

Warsow is easily the best free game I have ever played. I just absolutely love it. It doesn't run like crap ala nexuiz or alien arena and it is really really really fun. Plus the graphics are so awesome. I love colorful stuff and Warsow may just be the best deathmatch game I have ever played (in fun factor anyway) I don't mean to sound like the others are bad. But I just looooove warsow. It has done me good

I'll have to speak against Gunz for awhile. There are alwaysways to hack in Gunz, and the lag issues are terrible. I'll shoot someone full of 3 clips with uzis what do 16 dmg per shot and thay wont die. In TDM it's likea last man standing -- your team has to kill all of the other team and if there is a lagger on thier team -- which means he cant be killed because he is actually somewhere else than where his avatar is -- the game will never and and monotony sets in. From my days of playing GunZ it's programming was the most mangled piece of sh*t I have ever played; in terms of playability. I dont know if they ironed it out yet but that was my experiance with it^^

Wow that just confirmed my reason to never play GunZ. I figured if I could see lag in the screenshots, it's gonna be laggy. I don't know how I see the lag. Maybe I don't see lag. But I see signs of a laggy game. here are some signs:

Made in korea - Servers are most likely in korea too.. Not a great thing for us that live in North america.

International edition - doesn't give you a specific playing location.

Open beta - A korean open beta game with servers in god knows where. Sounds craptastic

                        Maybe it's you.

I've been playing for a while now, and of course there are hackers, but I dont take games as life and death. I just see hackers as cheating themselves out of a good game (They suck, and are rarely good enough to win a game)

Uzis suck, dont do 16 dmg a shot, and cant hit for shit.

As for laggers, during the game, it rarely is an issue (they can be easily banned), the only issue is a bug in the lobby in which some players cant be kicked from the server (It's being fixed.)

The game isnt done, and you're treating it as if it's been released and full. It's called BETA for a reason.

I wouldnt pass judgement so fast, because your logic is flawed.

Korea doesnt mean bad servers, actually, I've found most of the servers to be outrageously good, even the crowded ones.

International edition just means it has different language choices, as the Korean edition is in, you guessed it, Korean.

Betas are awesome, they let you get on the ground floor of great games, of course they need ironing out, they arent done yet.

Both of your expectations are far too high for a beta game.

Well for me: I want a game that doesn't suck. Of corse it's a bata.

You don't know how well I play in Gunz, do you, bank? And I only mentioned Uzis. Ive used rifles as well... and rocket launchers, everything. Shotguns... I've used tham all. I've tried all the clothes with different armor sets...

I see it a problem when there are hackers in most every game.

I see it a problem when there arepeople with 800+ ping in every game that wont die once the whole game because like I said, thier avatar is not where thier actual entity is, and while everyone's shooting the avatar, thay are not actually shooting the entity. The player that is lagging has view from the entity, and destroys everyone because everyone is'nt actually shooting him, just the avatar that is somewhere out there.

AND THEN THERE'S THE DOMINATION FACTOR. You just stated. After 2 or 3 games hopefully you scraped up 50-80 bounty from your winnings... Then you enter the free channel. The lvl 50's are blowing the SCHITT out of you with thier lvl 50 rocket launchers and thier lvl 50 clothes that give them rediculoisly powerful armor... and then you get DOMINATION.

But if you stay in the channel with your own level range and somehow resist the urge to get bounty and exp faster by killing the big leagures (impossible) and if you get a game where there are no laggers or hackers, then yes, it can be a good game.

                          And no I'm not drunk.

EDIT: The fact that it's beta doesn't take away the laggers and hackers and other bugs go away for me. But there's always domination...

Free channels are for after you've beaten the level-restraint servers, and are for testing of Quest mode. Of course you couldn't win, you couldnt even match up with them.

And there are hackers in every game, get used to it. Unless you want the tight fisted domination Blizzard tries to have over their servers. (1. Makes it unfun. 2. Doesnt work)

And your avatar explanation doesnt make any sense. When a player lags enough that they dont move, they're shown with a symbol over their head. They cannot be hurt, and cannot hurt others in this state.

And no, I dont know how well you play Gunz, but it cant be very good with all the bitching you do.

Gunz is still the most advanced free-game on the market with no catches. (I'm talking about you Anarchy Online!)

PS-How did this argument start? I presented a game that I happen to like, and you dispute it with incorrect information? wtf?

Double PS- Uncapitalize my name again and I'll rip out your eyes.
