  • New Game: In The Kingdom

Hey everybody! I just got done making something which I think will really excite a lot of you.

It's called "In The Kingdom" and it's a throwback FPS that's suspended somewhere between Wolfenstein, Doom, and of course Quake 1. In fact, during the development we nicknamed it "dooquakenstien"

It's short. Like a "pilot episode", but we made sure to pack the stages with a lot of things to look at and experience. We worked hard to give the player an incentive to really give it a few playthroughs and try to connect the dots

Anyways, it's $5 on Itch.io and if you're looking for something old, something new, check it out

      1) I don't really play games anymore but I gave you 10 bucks
      2) Since I probably wont play this and I donated 10 times the minimum (the page said $1 not $5) I will share a copy with the first 2 people that PM me that they want it. ($10/2 people = the $5 you originally asked for).

You have to be a Quakeone member with at least 30 real posts.

      proof of purchase

This game is practically unplayable on my laptop. I can play Quake with no lag at all using DP or FTE with more than a modicum of hires settings but this game is lagalicious. What are the system requirements?

Craaaaaaap. Performance reports have been all over the map for this thing. People on laptops saying it runs smooth, people on beast-machines saying it runs slow, everything. and we were so sure we found the smoking gun before putting it out there.

I'm sorry Mindz. This is the first game I've made in Unity, and while I did have some additional help from a code-poet friend of mine, we had to work on it in small bursts within the time budgeted to us.

We're trying to patch all the shit we can find, while I'm also discovering I built the stages using a very inefficient method. Only way I can see to solve that right now is to build entire new maps from scratch. :/ Dammed if you do, dammed if you dont.

I'm assuming you meant Gypsy. It's OK about the lag (for me). I didn't "pay 10$ for the game", I donated $10 bucks to your cause. I only played the game for a minute cause I felt like it was probably something I should do. In other words if I wouldn't have played, I wouldn't have been able to tell you it was laggy for me or give you any feedback for that matter.

I also only decided to gift out 2 copies to get other people to check it out. I figured a $10 donation was probably worthy of 2 gifted copies. I still have 1 copy left if anybody wants to try it out.

I don't know if this helps but, here are my relevant system specs

                Processor: Intel Celeron N2820 2x2.13 64 bit
                Ram: 4GIG (3.89Gb usable)
Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics - fully supports OPENGL 3.0 to 4.1 with partial 4.2 support (can address up to all 4 gigs of my ram- *source = specific device specifications)

this is all the specs say about my GPU (not very helpful)
Graphics (Graphics Processing Unit) GPU performance may vary depending on product model, design configuration, applications, power management settings and features utilized. GPU performance is only optimized when operating in AC power mode and may decrease considerably when operating in battery power mode. Total Available Graphics Memory is the total of, as applicable, Dedicated Video Memory, System Video Memory and Shared System Memory. Shared System Memory will vary depending on system memory size and other factors.

All I can say about that is I was in AC power mode when I tried to play your game.

I know my system isn't blazing fast or anything but I'm thinking my specs should be more than sufficient to run your game. I can run Quake with no problems and sufficient bells/whistles.

incoming review/report in this post, im downloading now!

will edit this shortly with hardware specs / anything else I can note for you.

                  w00t, Thanks Gypsy!

I got lost, and couldn't kill some baddies... I relied heavily on determining if I was going the right way based on if I was stumbling onto unopened doors. I enjoyed the speedy red enemy who had a red light trail behind him. The dark enemys are perfect against the atmosphere of the game being dark too. This is the 2nd most difficult enemy I came across in my 30 minutes of cutting teeth on it.

I recorded some gameplay inside Fraps but seek permission from you for its use here at Quakeone.com in the news. It's video of the action portion, I didn't realize that the beginning of the game was a tutorial of sorts.

so far you've got some good stuff here in my opinion, the most annoying part of the game was the inability to kill one particular type of enemy, no matter how much ammo I dumped into him lol.

kill it kill it i cant i cant

I maintained a steady solid 60fps, I presume this game is forced into vsync unless otherwise specified. I would imagine I would get more fps if I set vsync permanently off in CCC,I'll try that when I fire it up again after dinner and play some more, and get my system specs posted here.

Woah! Yeah Mind, youre clear to put a video up on the frontpage by all means!
Also, that unkillable enemytype is a new glitch i've not heard anyone report yet. Sorry it's happened, but thanks for letting me know!

Same goes for Gypsy, thanks for the system spec details. I think either your CPU (celeron) or the onboard video miiight be the culprit?? Also make sure to try both 32 and 64 bit builds if possible. Im hearing some people say it runs much better in 64 on a 64 os, then others tell me 32 runs better on 64 os.

One thing I've nailed down though, it seems to run exceptionally well on macs (which is really friggin weird. I developed it on a win-PC). Unity weirdness, man...

Anyways, thank you guys for all the badass feedback. I'll keep working to iron out everything I can. Keep your fingers crossed, we're really trying hard to make a bigger, beefier, creepier version of this.

I tried both builds before I wrote my post about lag. I did notice that the smaller windowed mode I played in increased the playability by a very very small fraction. That's no good though. I have a 32 inch monitor. What fun is it to play a game in a postage stamp? Going full screen in any resolution made the lag awful.

I'd be willing to test other builds for you but it costs me about $1 in bandwidth just to download your game. I wouldn't be willing to do constant and often tests. However, if you sent me tests thursday through sunday it would cost me nothing to DL your game cause I could use the internet at work and just DL it to my phone/tablet (transfer to pc at home).

@Celeron = culprit: You're probably right but there are a lot of celeron driven computers. I would definitely try and find a way to make it work. Unfortunately, processors and what-not are not a field that I am very educated in so, I don't have anything very helpful to share about making your game more friendly to the various types of motherboard->processor->graphic card configurations (onboard or otherwise)

I like the dirty-gritty look, but i have two issues with the game. Ok, actually three, but one of them is actually two halves:

                        1. I got lost all the time. I think it needs a minimap.
                        2. Esc exits immediately, you lose your progress. Needs savegame or at least last played level.
3a. Needs a setting for vsync, it is too laggy/floaty with vsync enabled. Also the ability to look down (unnecessary gameplay-wise, but looking only up feels like someone has put a rebar in my neck). Forcing vsync off from the driver seems to break a couple of effects.
3b. Needs a FOV setting, it is a bit nauseous at 16:9 at my large monitor

Other than that it has nice atmosphere and i like the pixel art and environment. Oh wait, extra bonus issue: the enemy respawns... i'm not sure i like them because it feels like i make no progress :-P. Or at least make them respawn far from your, not behind your back (i mean, it is annoying to kill one, go towards the wall to pickup some ammo, turn around and he's back).
                        Pixels over here.

Apologies in advance for any ignorance, but seeing this is supposed to be a DooM/Quake/Wolfenstien era game... even Gypsy's CPU should be able to run this thing right-side-up up-side-down forwards backwards diagonally and every other which way without so much as a hitch. Quake only required a 75MHz Pentium.

I'm not sure about his Intel integrated graphics, but I do know those have got a lot better over the years... a LOT better. This 'looks' to me like it's not using hardware rendering anyway, looks like a software renderer like Winquake.

Again I apologize for any ignorance, I know a lot of work went into this, and I'm not sure what's going on behind the scenes here but it 'looks' like a 486 should be able to run it.

I got distracted and forgot to provide the in-depth feedback I promised, but you've pretty much nailed it from what my experience was. I don't think the enemies was intended to originally respawn like they are at least in my opinion.
I did mention the "unkillable enemies" which you provided a better term for it, respawning. I like the idea of when I riddle a bad guy full of bullet holes, they stay dead and don't come back to shoot me in the arse I concur with the mini map, as the only thing keeping me informed of whether I had visited an area previously or not was memory and/or unopened doors!
