First, a Malaysian plane was shot down over eastern Ukraine. Then there was a plane crash in Taiwan. Now there's a plane crash in Northern Mali! Should I continue flying? Is this a government conspiracy? Does this mean that the world will end soon? I do not find this amusing; I find this very serious. I am going to arm myself... Well, I probably wouldn't go to that extent but this is definitely not a good season for flights! This is not scary, this is terrifying.

iirc, statistically you're more likely to die getting to/from the airport than while on the plane.

(nothing is ever 100% safe sadly, and at least planes don't require sitting on a boat for months at a time)
(personally I prefer trains due to hating airport security, but that's a different topic)

I hate flying. My wife made me fly to Ireland last year. I think this year i will bury her alive if she even dares to ask me to fly again.
