Yeah before they had twitch and youtubers that you could watch playthroughs you either had to hope for a demo, which was unlikely, or grab it on piratebay. I have "borrowed" hundreds of games from piratebay and I can say my steam account has well over 200+ games. The reason I purchased those? Because I tried a lot of them on piratebay first. :/ The rest I watched lets plays or several youtuber reviews/impressions to see if I'd like it.
Tho I should clarify I am not justifying my actions of stealing games. Either way it is wrong to do, but I accept the consequences and take precautions. VPN.
They have review sites but they are as bias as the big gaming magazine names were in the 90's and early 2000's. Not exactly people I trust when it comes to game journalism integrity.
The other disadvantage of piratebay is risk of virus/trojans if you aren't careful so I like twitch and youtube as an alternative to getting exposure to games you are thinking of purchasing.
yes, i am old enough to have played Quake on shareware.
Shareware was the trial, partial, version of a game. If you liked it you spent the $ to buy the full version. Why this went to the wayside i have no idea...
now it is all "pre-release" fund raisers etc... imho thats crap and is not what gamers want; buggy games that are not finished.
I periodically play MMO's and one in particular requires you to pay $15 to submit bug reports. I mean you cant submit bugs unless you contribute the minimum cost of the game...
