I've been seeing these articles and discussions since 2007 or so and I am still waiting for this apparent crash to take place. Just search "gaming industry crashing" and you'll see what I mean. Why are these being posted now? Do you think the gaming industry is about to crash?

You have to take what these "game journalists" say with a grain of salt. They're getting as bad as the major news networks. They create a lot of click bait and articles that state "THIS THING IS HAPPENING" but then end the article with "Is this thing happening, we'll have to wait and see..."
So no, I don't think it's crashing. I think it's transitioning and evolving into something different. It has been for a past few years, as the consumer decides what works and what doesn't work today.

They're comparing this to 1983, where the state of video games were becoming quite bad. Companies were releasing very bad games, kind of like now. But the difference here is: the internet, I don't think the gaming industry will crash as long as the internet's here. And there's so much more diversity compared to 1983, video games are pretty much in our lives at this point.Originally posted by ArrrCee View PostYou have to take what these "game journalists" say with a grain of salt. I don't think it's really transitioning or doing anything, it's just here to stay.

As far as I am aware, the '83 crash only happened in the USA.
(A flood of rubbish game cartridges killed confidence in the US market)
I was in England at that time and there was no effect there.
There was a lot of "bedroom" coders making games on Spectrums & Commodores in a similar way to how the indie scene works now.
There were Atari2600s and other consoles around but not that many as they were seen as closed systems (consoles vs home comp.).
It was a cool time, you could buy Sinclair User, Crash and some other mags which had code listings in. Prior to demo disks and tapes, this was how you got games with them.
Regarding the games industry, I worked in retail for years.
There were doomsayers every other day.
Markets shrink and expand, there is an ebb and flow dependent on the economic situation. Mostly, how much spare cash an individual has to spend.
Even when, like in the 2008 GFC, it is triple-A development and retail that get hit hard. Indie development carries on.Username : Atomic Robokid on Steam

How are developers coming out with bad games?
Lets see.....
Destiny
Titan Fall
There are hundreds of great titles coming out, it's a case of nostalgia. Most games today are far superior in magnitude, longevity, graphics, gameplay, storyline, and anything else you want to mention than ever before. People are getting completely immersed in games they're playing, and more addicted than in any other point in the history of gaming; simply because technology has come so far.
Sure, there are companies churning out the same game year in and year out for money, but equal to that are many companies that strive to put out the best games possible in an ever-competitive landscape.
When larger and more organized gaming leagues pop up, this will become a televised phenomena. Take the latest Dota2 International 4 tournament back in August for example, the prize pool was an astounding 11+ million (the largest ever in gaming history).

I think part of my issue is for 2 years now I have used a gaming laptop with a 15 inch screen and it just kills any motivation to want to try new games. My laptop can handle them all just fine but straining my eyes to see shit sucks. This is why I mainly stick to quake, urban terror and gta 4. My new gaming rig is on its way, i custom ordered it from newegg.com and said would take 2-6 weeks to get it. Also just ordered a new gaming/office desk special make out of Seattle, WA waiting on it to arrive as well. All this new stuff and I will barely get to use it.Originally posted by Rampage View PostHow are developers coming out with bad games?

It's transitioning because of things like mobile devices, the onset of indie gaming and consoles constantly adding new features like streaming on to their boxes. Things haven't moved on/progressed/transitioned faster at any point in the history of gaming.Originally posted by Grim Warlock View PostThey're comparing this to 1983, where the state of video games were becoming quite bad. I will agree that it's here to stay.
I do not agree with the other comments in the thread about a lot of bad games. On the contrary, I think there are a ton of good games out there. There might be more bad games than you remember because there are just more games out there in general now. Developer tools are so easy to use now, every one and their mom is making games!

Good summation.
