EFF Seeks DMCA Exemption to Preserve Abandoned Games | TorrentFreak

In attempt to remedy this situation the Electronic Frontier Federation (EFF) has teamed up with law student Kendra Albert to seek legal protections from the Copyright Office for those who modify gaming code in order to keep titles playable.

I was sad that id lost their independence and even moreso when Carmack left.
I don't believe Bethesda would agree that Quake is abandoned though.
If Bethesda did go out of business, id's franchises would be quickly snapped up by another company.

Without Carmack, I doubt Quake will ever get a new update/patch but I think the community took that job over ages ago.

I personally don't think Quake has ever been or ever will be abandoned.

IMO you cannot account for your hardcore fans supporting/carrying your product into viability well beyond the companies support, for free, for the love of a game.

When the community bolsters (any) support for a game or product, solely on their own...

See Yugo2hecK saving Quake1 multiplayer from a early extinction, back prior to Quakeone.com existance!

^ there is a snippet of those details/facts.

      pure opinion obviously but....
Quake1, without the investment of its fans, wouldn't be here today.

I have high hopes in what the EFF is attempting....

even for games that are not Quake1.... check this out...

I'm totally all for the general point you're saying, saving abandoned games and I agree that community support isn't the same as official support but I still think the bottom line is:
Quake is still functional and for sale on Steam with a very much alive publisher.

As far as other abandonware, I agree that it would be a shame to let classic old games die.

I dabble in this very grey area myself, I have a dos/retro box setup full of old games that can only be run (properly) on the original P200, SB16, Matrox & 4mb Monster3D(fx) hardware.

I think something like this has been pushed for before, I hope they can work something out.

the quake1's savior bit doesnt make any sense. quake1 is already open source (except for the art), and already has tons of engine ports and gamecode modifications.

the eff is trying to seek legal protections for people who want to create custom engines and start up public servers for games that dont work because the servers they rely on are gone, or the engines dont work on modern graphics cards/cpu's or any other form of bitrot.

Indeed. id software has already made the great move of releasing the engine under the GPL, they are definitely NOT what the EFF is talking about here.

What are some of the cult favorites or really good games that have a good online*or had for online*,with addictive offline single player game play, the ones that could be at risk to those intrusive video game molesters, I am not sure what games will be affected by those MPAA and RIAA assholes that show up everywhere on the internet and are equally pissing everyone off as bad as the Kardashian chicks that are in everything online but porn, the one thing that at least one of them was half way decent at with the sound off... That aside.. Who else is siding on this with the MPAA/RIAA/DMCA who lobbies for this infestation, and pushes them to their cause.. This is probably off topic but it irks me tho, it seems like all games for pc are downloaded from origin,or downloaded on steam, and etc's.. and the thing that Pisses me off is that you can't have a pc and own a game at the same time without internet access and the bandwidth resources you need to get these huge files and their huge expansion packs and download speeds are slow as shit, yet you pay for the game but what they really do is lease a key to you so you can use the damn game,at the expense of your precious bandwidths where not everyone has 10Gb service providers.. The no internet no game thing is ridiculous.. I support the end of invasive self appointed groups that want their hands up in every spot of the internet consumer market structure scrapping things like vultures to feed off the bottom just to help out the top as little minions, guess they just like giving head.. room, to the greedy vagina nipples (*the 'C u next Tuesdays' acronym was vchipped for being one of the most universal and awesome words that exist, it isn't racist sexist or offensive that I know of, i don't even think any religious books are against that word, the religious people might ovaryact a clit, but I breastpeckt bare bitjizz*), that keep increasing an already supersaturated swamp, worse than a hooker that robs you...With a hooker at least you told them you wanted to get fuked! I like the way project free tv handles the DMCA with their legal mobojumbo page its for something different than this I know, but it may be helpful in some way to preventing them from attacking games, I know this isn't about the same copyright infringing stuff, but they keep quiet a few shows and movies going for a very long time... They actually do comply with the DMCA, because the new Doctor Who episodes with that new doctor that I tried to like, was shut down completely for that entire season for copyright crap, the other seasons r still up tho.. Still Im bewildered why the art, which I guess is the textures for the maps? Is not considered open src. Sure I guess they could be put in "other games" but so has the Quake engine src code I am sure. Cuts n pastes have probebly happened since it went public. But I still maintain that all the original Q1 maps, engine code , models and sounds artent useful at all unless you are quake modding. Lets see someone try to maka a map using these textures in another game not quake, see how popular it is, and if anyone would attepmt such lunacy to begin with....

I would think that, art assets remain copyright material because the original owner doesnt want someone to easily make a sequel and sell it. They are preserving the look and feel of Quake, to it's original release.

Modding quake, or as said above, bastardizing their IP with an unofficial sequel.

The quake sounds are everywhere btw. I'm told they are from a sound effect pack. You can hear them in movies all the time.

I'm sure many of the quake textures could be reused as well. especially if you're willing to do paintovers.

Also, the engine is definitely useful outside of quake modding.
hexxen2, malice, that xmen game, early daikatana, halflife.

Not to mention the games that use much later derivitives, like nexuiz, xonotic and steelstorm. In the Shadows is a couple of textures away from being a completely standalone game.
