  • Computer Gaming Monitor?

So I've been thinking of getting a new gaming computer.... I haven't bought computer monitors in a long time because I've had an iMac as my main desktop machine for several years now.

What computer monitor would you recommend for gaming? I see there are some of those fancy 4k or ultra HD monitors out now. Do those work well for gaming?

The top three results from this RPS search should give you some info.

The next time I spend a lot of money on a monitor I would like one of these.

If possible, avoid the temptation to buy a big tv to use as your monitor, because I find that if I concentrate on that type of screen for any length of time, it kills my eyes.

Personally, I would probably wait on the 4k monitor and just get a much nicer hd monitor with a high refresh rate. 4k isn't standard yet and will be a bit expensive in addition to not being super supported at the moment.

I've heard 4k looks amazing but you need to sink a lot of cash into your rig to get it to run 60 fps constantly in newer games. Unless of course money isn't an issue, then by all means, Sink that cash! =)

Something to also keep in mind, is DX12 is right around the corner as far as I know.

I wasn't trying to derail the discussion of Monitors exclusively, but consider that Computer Gaming was a part of the title, it deserved to be mentioned!

What is so unfortunate about a low level api? I can not fathom anyone hating on DirectX12, as it is purportedly going to basically beef up gaming on PC's....

AMD's Mantle has basically been adopted into the Khronos group and become Vulkan / Vulcan , the next flavor of OpenGL.

I'm doing my best to keep up with all this....

Also, about 4K gaming, I do not believe there is a single card out there that can push a game with all the bells and whistles enabled in a game at that resolution, and as ArrrCee mentioned it isn't standard yet.

From what I have read, Black to White millisecond timing is more important, and the industry tries to cram Grey to Grey millisecond timing down everyones throat which isn't as important. The higher the millisecond count the more ghosting that occurs on your monitor.

refresh rates is the other crucial aspect in gaming when it comes to monitors....a handful of Quakers are currently using 144hz monitors, and I have witnessed statements something to the tune like this...

"It seems when I turn a corner, while I am already seeing an opponent and it seems that there is a second or so where the enemy acts as if they don't even see me, like they haven't even RENDERED my quake guy on their screen yet"............. I'm going to ask Bruce or KT to come and weigh in on this subject, as they own some serious gaming monitor hardware IIRC.

Why do I mention DX12 in respect to monitors? It may takes less powerful hardware to achieve gaming @ 60fps with 4K resolutions once this "low level" api hype train finally hits the market, so [email protected] very well could be more achievable than it currently is,using what is out there right now.

I, KongsDong, and Bruce use the following monitor -- [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Asus-VG248QE-24-Inch-LED-Lit-Monitor/dp/B00B2HH7G0]Amazon.com: Asus VG248QE 24-Inch LED-Lit Monitor: Computers & Accessories[/ame]. It works great for quake and gaming. Just one caveat - you will need to drop the rr to 120hz to play Netflix, hbo go, and so on, see here - [ame]https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/677109/someone-please-help-entire-screen-static-when-running-movies-in-netflix-/[/ame]. It really depends on what "else" you do with your monitor - I have two - an IPS which I use for watching videos, browsing, and so on, with the 144hz dedicated to gaming. There are also newer larger -- 27 in -- versions coming out at 144hz - [ame=http://www.amazon.com/VG278HE-27-Inch-Screen-LED-lit-Monitor/dp/B00906HM6K]Amazon.com: ASUS VG278HE 27-Inch Screen LED-lit Monitor 144hz 2ms: Computers & Accessories[/ame].

Really? The biggest downfall of DX12 its Windows only where as OpenGL is every where.

dude that is akin to being mad the wind isn't blowing hard enough to compensate for the sun's rays. That isn't in my control or yours

Vulcan or Vulkan , however it will be spelled, will offer a viable alternative to DX12.....

I was just trying to indicate that 4K gaming could very well be a valid option in the very near future, but I wouldn't DARE hold my breath that gaming companies choose the free alternative from Khronos group. OpenGL has been available for a long time now, but there wasn't mass adoption. I don't know of any modern game that even has the option to use it.

You and I can *hope* that the next version of OpenGL DOES see wide adoption. It would be hilarious if the Khronos api sees wider adoption and Microsoft is left with an api no one wants to use because it 'costs money to license to use it'.....

@ KT , thank you so much for bringing some information to the table as an actual owner of a 144hz gaming monitor. I rep'd you for it.

All I really know about these new graphics apis is that they're going to be a pain to debug and develop (glitches galore, expect stuff to start breaking due to different gpus consuming data at different rates, and for it to finally not be the driver's fault).
They're not rewritten to offer any new capabilities, but rather just as a lower-level interface that lets you shoot yourself in the foot instead of having the api hide all the work. This is great for cpu-bound stuff, but doesn't really affect maximum screen resolution.

                            Thanks for clarifying some things.
