Thanks for the info. I actually haven't really done much computer gaming in years... I have a PS3 and PS4 which I play Skyrim, GTAV, etc. but that's about it. While I like the gaming consoles, it's not the same as a PC. Right now the only games I play on my computer are Quake, World of Warcraft (haven't played in over a year now), and Diablo II/III. I have an iMac for my desktop and while it has a graphics card in it, it's not great for gaming. Quake runes fine without all the modern upgrades to it, but WoW and Diablo have settings turned down somewhat. I have a Macbook Pro that I can play WoW on with very high settings but after about 45 minutes it starts getting hot, and I don't want to damage that equipment because it was hella expensive!

I know I can install Windows on my Mac and play more games that way but I'd rather have a machine that can actually handle modern games. This is why I want to get a new gaming rig and sell the iMac.

As an alternative to selling your iMac, you could use it, hooked up to your living room TV as a Steam streaming box, you could go the whole hog and ditch the apple os and reformat it to Ubuntu, if you wanted to.
Either way, with a decent home network you can stream the games with all the grunt of your new machine, and all the client machines require is the Steam software and a gfx card that can decode video.
The downside is that you are running two machines but the upside is that you don't have to move your gaming monolith around just to be able to play PC versions, sat on your couch.

I got an old mac mini that I was thinking of trying this out with, hooked up to the old bravia in the kitchen. I am a bit worried that if I go full steambox with it, that I might not be able to get it back to OS10 but,ya know, it's just packed away not getting used so I might as well.

Talking about Skyrim, you 'aint played it till you run a fully modded PC version, if you still like fighting dragons then take a trip over to the Nexus when you get your new machine. I got a list of recommendations and the correct boot order to get them to play nice together.

I suspect a number of games for the Mac are shittily ported causing them to use outrageous amounts of CPU.

In fact, sometimes I wonder why something like Netflix on a Mac can use 25% cpu and on Windows it uses 3%.

There are some Steam games that load in maybe 15 seconds on Windows and on my Macbook Pro takes 3 minutes to load up a map.

Oh man, Sole, you could get an i3 cpu, any socket 1150 motherboard, and an nvidia 960 video card if those are the only games you want to play.

I just upgraded a couple weeks ago. I stick with Gigabyte, too, since they're not bottom-of-barrel and not gimmicky. I kept my old video card, the 750 ti (it's ok), but went with a Z97-HD3P motherboard (free 8gb of ram at the time) with a 4690k i5 and the 212 cooler, since I had a couple hundred dollars extra to try my hand at overclocking.

Since you have to buy a case and power supply, it might be hard to get it all under $500, but I'd bet that this number is probably not your goal.

Yeah, but look at benchmarks. you get more performance per dollar out of a video card than a cpu. Yeah feeps are better with an i5, and you definitely want one if you're going to buy today's games, but otherwise, the $100 you save on the cpu can get you a better card. The newest i3 is 3.8ghz, the 4370. I'm talking budget when I say i3 is okay. If $100 is a laughable expense, then go with an i5 for sure.

Yea, those aren't the only games I intend to play. If that was the case I'd stick with my iMac because I really don't have a problem with those games on my iMac. I want to play all the newer games.

Looks like Newegg just put a bunch of the parts I'm looking at on sale! Woot!!

Parts should be delivered by Tuesday next week.

@Mindz - I will look into resolving that.

I just hope the components arrive TOGETHER. Nothing sucks more than getting 75% of the items you ordered in the mail, and then you wait a week plus, or longer if the shipment is originating from china. Pure madness when the shipments are originating in china.

I ordered everything (with the exception of the monitor and Windows - got from Amazon and will have on Sunday) from Newegg. There were two components that were cheaper elsewhere, but I figured since everything else was coming from Newegg, I'll spend the extra $10 to get them from the same place.

All items were listed in stock and available to ship from Newegg facilities. I'm assuming they're all coming from DC's in the USA...

I just got tracking numbers for my case, cd/dvd burner, and extra case fans.
