Here's a link to Rock Paper Shotguns handy guide to shutting down some of
    Windows 10 "Features" :

Windows 10 Is Spying On You: Heres How To Stop It

For me, this isn't a reason to boycott, just a cautionary tale of how to turn off some of the more intrusive elements.

    ...How to opt out

OK, heres how to take control of this stuff if youre worried about it. No, opting out is not especially simple, although if you take an absolutist approach it doesnt take at all long to set everything to no. If youre yet to install Windows 10 and are concerned about all this stuff, you can head most of it off at the pass by declining Express settings and choosing options yourself, refusing any request to let the OS or apps access your location and turning the Cortana search assistant off. If you missed the boat there, youll need to do any and all of the following. Even if you were super-cautious during setup, be sure to follow step 3 below if youre concerned.

    1. Go to Settings Privacy and go through the 13 different screens there and turn anything which concerns you to off. The biggest, most universal settings are under General, while the other screens let you choose which apps can and cant access your calendar, messages, camera, mic, etcetera. There may well be stuff you want to leave on for instance, I do actually want Windows Calendar app to access my calendar data (obv), I just dont want it to sell that data on because I dont want to be bombarded with flower ads when its my mums birthday.

    2. Depending on whether youve been finding it useful or not, you may want to go to Cortanas settings and turn off everything there. Its just working as a basic file search for me now, as I didnt want its suggestions, I didnt want it to lock me into Bing and I didnt want a tiny part of my processor to be forever dedicated to listening out for voice commands I will never use.

    3. This is the crucial one, and so fundamental to Windows 10s tracking that Microsoft have stuck the setting on an external website, which they say is so that its on one easy dashboard, but I find it hard not to wonder if its in the hope that we dont easily stumble across it while browsing Windows 10s own Privacy menus. Said website is colourful and cheerful and can play a video at you talking about how wonderful targeted advertising is. Ignore the bumf and instead go directly here and set both options to Off. Its the innocuous-sounding Personalised ads wherever I use my Microsoft account which is the likely root of all this, because having that on means Windows 10 itself becomes a hub for targeted ads. Youll probably have set up Windows 10 with a Microsoft account, because it heavily encourages you to do so with talk of synchronised files and settings and a OneDrive cloud account during installation, but this means the OS is signed into that account all the time. As a result, Windows 10 itself has it spyglasses on, not just apps or pages that youre signed into with your MS account.

I notice that every time I go back to that page, the Personalised ads in this browser setting has silently turned itself back on again. This is concerning, but Im not yet sure if its a bug or if its exploiting sessions as an excuse to reset regularly. Judicious ad and cookie control with your plugins and browser options of choice can change this, however. Again, do remember that many websites are dependent on advertising revenue to survive, but opting out of targeted advertising and having that opt out be respected is another matter entirely.

    4. You may also wish to remove your Microsoft account from Windows 10 and use a local account instead. This will double-down on restricting whats harvested, though youll lose out on features such as settings synchronisation across all your PCs and will suffer more nagging from stuff like the Windows Store and OneDrive. Probably not a big deal for many people, I suspect. Go to Settings Accounts Your Account within Windows 10 (or just type Accounts into haha Cortana) to get to the relevant options.

If you have multiple PCs already running Windows 10 youll need to do all of this on each of them, although your Microsoft account opt-out should be universal...

It was late in the day on July 29th and I still didn't get the notification that the upgrade was available.

I manually did a "Check for Update" on Windows 8.1 and an update appeared basically front and center that said "Update to Windows 10 now".

If you're looking to upgrade I suggest giving that a shot.

      ---

I just got done with a clean install of Windows 10. I used Rufus USB maker to make a bootable USB jumpdrive from the Windows10Home-64bit ISO downloaded from Microsoft.

I have to say a lot of the issues I was experiencing before have almost vanished. The system is more reponsive then before, the programs I had issues with aren't acting up as much and the overall appeal has gone up a bit for me.

If you upgraded from a previous version of Windows ( 7 or 8 )

I suggest you do a clean install, make sure to back up your data. Upgrading over your existing operating system can cause some issues not expected by Microsoft just yet... Technically if you have Windows 10 then welcome to the beta tester's lounge. Here is a link to the guide I used to create the Windows 10 USB boot:
Create a Windows 10 USB Bootable Flash Drive (Updated)

      *Some notes
-Windows 10 associates your Windows 10 key with your Microsoft Hotmail account. You don't need to enter a product key during installation, just have your Hotmail account info (user/pass) handy to login.

-I used the USB Jumpdrive method because my CD-ROM on this laptop loves to eat CDs now, while the USB method seemed a bit more technical and complex, I had no issues. Just remember if you're going to make a bootable CD/USB and have a UEFI type BIOS (New fancy PC start up lookn thingy) then make sure to select the GPT formatting in the Partition Scheme settings in rufus. I had this issue as I didn't originally select this option and the USB was not recognized initially which caused me to re create the bootable USB jump drive.

So I just made the switch to windows 10, and the first two hours haven't been too bad. I spent a lot of that time setting privacy settings and massing with amd video drivers

I was wondering if anyone knows how to alt tab directly to the desktop, because when I do it, I can only tab between open windows, and not the desktop.

There should be a "Show desktop" button hidden deep in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Also Anyone looking to get their awesome Windows 7 styles menu back might want to checkout "Classic Shell". I stumbled on it a bit ago and configured my start menu to look more like the Windows 7 start menu while still being able to use the new Win10 styled apps.

Starting to love Windows 10 :]

Yes I see that, and thanks for pointing it out!

I was also wondering if there is a way to get there by pressing alt+tab, say for example if a program locks up, I can't click on the show destop button, and I don't seem to be able to alt tab to the desktop.

I see what you're asking now. Windows 8 had this feature I believe, it's very strange Windows 10 doesn't come with this enabled.

Maybe Winkey+D would suffice. It goes directly to the desktop.

It's not a perfect fit for this solution but it does the same functions you're needing.

ctrl shift escape can bring up task manager, this is how I typically close unruly applications.

if all else fails me I go straight for "yes mad" ctrl alt delete

Windows 10 ins't compatible with my graphics card (nVidia GeForce GT 745M).
As a result I have no ability to use my laptop's graphics card whatsoever.

I have tried numerous nVidia drivers from version 311.** to version 355.82, none of which have worked: "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)"
Every time I use Display Driver Uninstaller, restart into safe mode, uninstall the drivers' leftover files with DDU, restart again, install a different graphics driver (and possibly have to restart again to finish the install), I check Device Manager and see that little yellow triangle thinking maybe this time will be the last time I am so aggravated to see it...

Windows 10 is also incompatible with my file backup software (AOMEI backupper), which did everything I needed it to do on windows 8.1, but won't read or write its backup format anymore on windows 10.
Good Game Windows 10/10, would not upgrade again.

it will take a few days/weeks to migrate all the drivers and software and reinstall it to win10

Do you guys realize the entire scope of Microsoft's snooping and crazy policies with this OS?

Ex: Borrows bandwidth from your home Internet connection: " Windows 10 will use your Internet connection to help other people download apps or update their PCs.

If someone (let's call her Rebecca) is having trouble connecting to Microsoft's servers, Rebecca might instead download that update or app from you, a complete stranger.

It all happens in the background, without either of you ever knowing it."

Ex 2: Scan for counterfeit games: "We may automatically check your version of the software and download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorized *hardware peripheral devices."

There is much more. This is shit I would never install and much more importantly should be fuggin' illegal.
Name's damage_inc, and killing is my business. Don't worry though, it's nothing personal! Oh wait... maybe it is

I'm betting the EULA covered all the legal bases, and if they are ever contended on the legalities or what not about what is and isn't happening on the Win10 os,that army of lawyers that Microsoft has will be called upon lol.

There is probably an answer in this link I will supply

                            https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/c...e_not_so_fast/

By the time Microsoft or some other game dev actually has a DX12 game in the wild, running in a fully fledged DX12 api driven game, the dust will have settled and the ins and outs of Win10 will become abundantly clear. Lets not forget that, it is common knowledge that for every instance of "big brother" type activities are forced upon the people, some of those people with the technical knowledge and prowess dissect what is happening or how its happening,as to circumvent those big brother shenanigans. I am pretty sure that this is already happening lol.

If you have no faith in Microsoft, then have faith in the people

Citations please. Edit : instead of waiting, I researched it for myself.

in my personal opinion, Windows 10 right now isn't worth the possible headache that could arise from the switch. The real seller for Win10 will be DX12. I would argue that having Windows 10 right now isn't anything except like you buying a new set of clothing/outfit and saying ta-da I'm new.

DX12, oh how I want to know what treasures you hold for PC Gaming. Lets also not forget that Khronos Groups Vulkan api WILL be available for the older iterations of Windows , how far back that goes IDK, but one thing is for sure.... If Vulkan beats DX12 at every facet of measurements, who says the industry will adopt another Microsoft dominated world where DX is the official go-to API. From what I understand , Vulkan would be more agnostic option for ANY operating system. DX locks you into Windows platform, and IIRC it will cost money licensing the tech from Microsoft.

Boy do I hope Vulkan trounces DX12 at every imaginable point....and I can EASILY see game dev's choosing the api that will reach MORE people/allow the most far reaching capacity for their product.

Make games for DX12 that ignores older Windows OS / ignores anyone who doesn't upgrade to Win10? Or go with the api that supports the previous two versions of Windows + the newest. Seems like a no brainer to me.
