You're entitled to your opinion. Winrar's interface is freaking ugly and took me fucking forever to figure out how to create split packages. 7z is simple as hell. Right click, 7z, open/extract/etc, options, done.

The winrar gui reminds me of my first few GUI programs that I made long ago. fUgly.

rars are also a bitch in linux systems.

Now that I think of it, I think the WinRAR interface IS confusing. I guess I became used to it.

7-Zip can do one thing that WinRAR can't ---> rename files IN the Zip, which I think is a very nice feature.

I still think 7-Zip's interface sucks, but the command line is very good. And I admit that it is difficult to find out to do things like split archives (the first time, at least) in WinRAR.

The scene uses Winrar, that's why it is so wide-spread.
I like 7zip much better too, also because it is free.

no,that was exclusively for .ZIP compression archives only.

.RAR isnt supported by windowsxp but .ZIP is,thats where your getting that from.

It's useless for music, movies and much other (already compressed) stuff and thus those scene .rar releases are not even compressed. The only reason the scene uses .rar is the CRC check. Bittorrent does CRC/Hash checking and "fixing" itself and thus does not need an "external" CRC check.

joking? I don't always want all of the items listed in the torrent. You can choose which files you want to download. If it's a rar, you have to dl the entire thing.

I didn't even bother reading this thread. Seen it all before. You're pretty much stuck with whatever OS/Company you began with. Some users change, most don't.

My friend who was fired as a system admin persuaded his boss to change most of the server computers to linux. It's easy to do this when you're not asking for a $10k grant. Good for testing too.

I've persuaded many others as well.

C*S what distro of Linux do you currently suggest, gentoo?
I noticed gentoo also has a freeBSD flavor as well... interesting

suggest for whom? People who want to learn and research or people who just want stuff to work? Gentoo is not for newbs but it still a fun distro.

I'd recommend Ubuntu for beginners. It sets up your drivers automatically (should anyways).

Ya? Actually I am installing (compiling? \libtool --silent --mode=compile) GenTOO on this machine as I'm surfing the net! Crazy! The ISO cd comes with a complete functionable version so I can surf while it works on the installation. I'm not sure why it's rebuilding executables, I thought I chose only to install binaries off the LIVEcd :/ oh well too late to cancel (3rd time already atempting this install as is..)

You'll find that 30% of the gentoo forum postings are questions on how to install the damn thing
