  • I experience with Vista..

I got to mess around on a Vista system today at the store, I wasn't expecting much and that's about what I got.

It instantly reminded me of a dumbed down XP, menus explaining everything, stuff like that.

I was on a limted account and I managed to get task manager open, the command line, and services.msc...

Overall, it pretty much told me not to upgrade.

I don't like Vista as well as XP. It looks better, but so far I have encountered a LOT of different problems.

    Some examples:

    1. My Network connections keep disappearing as if the hardware doesn't exist. (i.e. my ethernet adapter sometimes will disappear from Network connections AND Device manage). It isn't common but it has happened at least twice.
    2. It tells me that Norton Firewall is On in "Security". I uninstalled Norton a week ago (because Norton is a ratty product) so it can't be on.
    3. My wireless sometimes tells me I have limited connectivity and doesn't work. I never have this problem using wireless with Windows XP.
    4. Some applications like WinRAR can't seem to be able to do their job via right-clicking associated files.
    5. It tells me the "Windows Color Scheme Has Been Changed" after I exit Quake every single time.
    6. The control panel is radically different from prior versions of Windows. Things like Add/Remove Programs -- where you normally uninstall most applications -- is renamed and so are many other things.
    7. A required 32-bit help file is intentionally missing from Vista, so a number of mostly Windows 95/98 era programs for Windows cannot display Help when pressing F1. I read an article on this and OEM's are forbidden from pre-installing this file by Microsoft for reasons I can't understand, unless they want to intentionally break some older apps's help systems.
    8. Most software firewalls are not compatible with Vista. I don't have a software firewall (preinstalled Norton = junk, will not use that) since not even ZoneAlarm works (which I don't particularly like anyway) is compatible with Windows XP. Windows Firewall is something I do not trust to block outbound traffic (I don't even want Microsoft apps talking to Microsoft -- sorry) and Windows Firewall does not block outbound by default.
    9. Some applications aren't Vista-compatible and it tell you this when you attempt to install.

Maybe some of these things will be fixed via updates, but they have made everything so difficult to find and control.

Makes you wonder what those Beta testers are really reporting? I won't bother with Vista for at least six months. Baker, I've never had a problem with XP Pro. Actually love it.

Isn't Vista still in beta anyways? Wouldn't these problems be normal for a beta?

I'm not using beta. I have Vista on my laptop because it was pre-installed from HP when it was purchased a week ago.

XP is easily the best operating system Microsoft has made. Maybe Vista will eventually be like that.

Vista will be like that. However, I'll wait even longer than Net-Tyme before I'll go out and buy it. I'll give it plenty of time and hopefully all the bugs will be worked out. I guess I like for everyone else to be the "GuineaPigs" before I sink a few hundred dollars into an OS.

I will find you... it's only a matter of time.

^ Agreed. The only way I'll probably get Vista is if my computer breaks in the next year and I have to go buy a new one. (seems like most of the new ones come with it preloaded now)

I've got my Windows 2000 machine set-up just they way I like it. I don't feel like resetting everything up if I install Vista.

Why Windows 2000? because it can do almost everything Xp can do, and it runs best on my computer, that's why

& I might update to Vista after a year or so when I build another computer, depends on how they've changed/ updated it.

From alot of reviews. I don't think I would want vista now. I'm pretty satisfied with XP Home even though I do want to get my hands on a legit copy of XP Pro.
