Reason: RAWR!!!!!!!
Killer NIC cards do improve performance, they offload all network processing to the card, and prioritise UDP. Are they worth $280? Hell no, not to me anyway.
Back in the day there used to be the same kind of thing with software and hardware modems, except that hardware modems did actually make a noticeable difference.
I don't really understand why you're arguing this. There were two varieties of modems, one lot termed "hardware" modems, and the other "software". The former would do a large amount of the processing and data management on their own, the latter offloaded all processing tasks to the PCs main CPU (and only came later, when PC CPUs could actually cope with that strain alongside running an OS). These were commonly accepted terms, obviously from an engineering standpoint they both incorporated some level of hardware and software, varying amounts of onboard logic, but we're talking about popular terminology.
I'm going to tell you to go and read up on softmodems again, since I don't think you're understanding the issue.
