Optical Illusion or Clever GIF?

Is this truely a Optical Illusion or is this just a Clever GIF image?

Watch the Sillouette, it should appear turning clockwise, and if you start watching its Shadow below the sillouette , it seems to reverse direction.


Weird shit, maybe someone with a Animated GIF Editor can play it frame by frame and tell me.

If you look at the spinning girl's silhouette above, you will think it is spinning clockwise, probably. When you check her shadow below, momentarily the spinning direction changes in your mind, and now the girl is spinning counter-clockwise. It can be quite hard at the beginning to notice switch of the spinning direction, but eventually you'll manage.

first I saw CW. Then looked at the shadow and BOOM CCW. Then looking up I got CW again, then CCW again. Now I'm stuck with CCW

That's good. It's fine if you don't look at the shadow at the bottom. When I look at the shadow, I can make her go any way I want.

Wow that is nuts. She started CW, then I did the shadow thing and she was going CCW. I started again with CW and saw that her right leg was leading, but her left leg is leading on CCW. Unbelievable.

the illusion is caused when you either look directly at the actual foot and analyze its motion, or just stare blankly at the shadow. depth perception then becomes limited and makes it appear as if it is going the opposite direction. It's a weak illusion, but an example of top-down processing combined with the Phi Phenomenon that considers rapidly portrayed still pictures as "moving".
