yeah expansion and contraction--i remember hearing something about how a large building can expand up to a foot or more on a hot day. crazy

Seems a bridge that was only rated a 4 in 2005 would have been shut down then for repairs. Expansion would cause bolts to rip out and seams to rip open. contraction would cause a settling onto itself and probably would have been more noticable as it shifts. Someone needs to lose their cushy job over this one. They have been repairing bridges here for about 5 - 7 years. I had to call our other office in MN to make sure everyone was ok there.They are!

I think the bridge was built in the late sixties, and it had been on a list for repair.
A family friend was actually scheduled to be working construction on that bridge the day it fell. Instead, he was working in at another site, just for the day.
I heard that they had a huge mound of dirt sitting on the bridge, I'm thinking that the weight of the mound, and the weight of the traffic set it off.
It's cool that there is another Minnesotan here
