Chuck keeps up inadvertently coming up with interesting ideas for new threads.

Chuck started a server named quake.widomaker.com that evolved to become a mega-popular server. The host finally pulled the plug on in 2004. In 2002, he handed off the server when encountering a major illness and didn't completely like how it was managed the last 2 years. He had invested a lot of time and effort into the server, the QuakeC and creating a base of players.

So ... the topic of this thread. How do reconcile things like these that happen in life with your philosophy in life?

Do you accept these things and move on? Is justice in the world something that requires a lot of patience? Does the world work in mysterious ways where one cannot quite know whether and event is good or bad?

A story I read long ago:

Once upon a time, an old man, Sai, lived near the Chinese Northern Fort. One day his horse ran away. His neighbors commiserated with him over his misfortune, but Sai said "How do you know this is not really good luck?". A few days later the horse returned, bringing another horse with it. However when his neighbors congratulated him on his good luck, the old man said "How do you know this is really good luck?" Sure enough, some while later Sai's son fell while riding the horse, and broke his leg. However this turned out to be good fortune when all the young men of the village were ordered to join the Emperor's army. Sai's son didn't have to go since he had a broken leg.

Shit happens. It's nothing like losing a friend.

That server and the players on it were my friends for 6 years. Sure I saw some of them at other servers afterward and even became an admin at tltq for a bit just to keep on top of things, but it was never the same.

I am still the godfather of quake. I've been around since the beginning to make sure that the game continues. I'll make sure there's always a server to play on. I keep coming back and posting because besides liking to brag about my Quake-old-schoolness, I really do care about the game and the players.

Play with someone for at least 8 hours a day and try not to know her/him. If you don't, then you don't get the game. These are people sitting in their homes with the same problems/wives/mothers/parents/children/businesses etc that you have. You can only play the game to escape those problems for so long. Eventually you realize that those you are playing are not that much different than yourself.

Then you have found a real friend, your problems don't seem so bad, and you start to really enjoy the game.
