This thread is for describing your first encounters with other players, whether meeting them on a server, on a forum or by some other means.
Yellow No. 5
I had disappeared from Quake in early 2004 and returned early 2005. My first full game back, I played a formidable player at Shmack and beat him by a few frags. It was a little bit of challenge. I said to myself "Yeah, I still got it". Little did I know, as time went on I would less and less often be doing the beating No. 5 thing.
Canadian Sniper
Posted a lot in the little shout box at QuakeTerminus. Eventually I would see him on the RA server.
MindfieldzX
One day out of nowhere comes MindfieldzX responding to a thread called "IHOC botting community":
I come reperesenting all that is "legal" in IHOC. You LOL Dole, know who I am and what I am capable of. ... I feel it's my duty to put you whiney females in their place. First off,IHOC obviously isnt the place for someone if they think everyone there bots,or cheats. Simply put,you step into IHOC,you get owned.IHOC isnt for the lame Quake 1 player who thinks everyone cheats,as a matter of fact,I can name off some people who WILL run your asses in a game of quake,on any mod.Dont judge what you cant understand,or even begin to compete with. I am the M!NDF!3LDZ X , I am out of the game temporarily, soon as I get my life straightended out,I WILL be playing on your server, funny thing is I dont see myself getting kicked for FACT based observations of botting,or any form of cheating.I do see me getting banned for simply "being on a better skill" level and owning the fuck outa each and everyone of ya. IHOC is my home,if anyone knows who is who is the botting community I would, more so than any of you all would, based on I play there more than you do.This issue is far from over, its just simply being delayed for reasons that are out of my control.
I knew I was gonna like him :d
Chuck
Someone on Marlinspike once say hey connect to this server. I did. Chuck was the guy changing maps so I figured he was the Widomaker admin.
IEEE 802.11
The often silent other guy on the Beatdown server. Dolemite talked a ton. IEEE was very quiet. If Dolemite was the Tick, I kind of thought of IEEE as the Tick's sidekick "Arthur" at first. I knew I had recognized the name from somewhere. It was because I had: http://quakefriends.8m.com/
Trinca
One day at Rune Central last year, someone new posted looking for maps. I did my the best to find the maps, but he had already tried the links I told him about and they weren't the right ones.
vb / Entar
One day last year when we were first creating prototypes for the QuakeOne.com site, no one knew about the site and then one day 2 mysterious guests register and post who had not been told about the undisclosed site address.
A mystery to this day and I felt bad because over the course of the next year, those 2 in particular must have posted at 3 or 4 incarnations of prototypes that we later scrapped and weren't really open.
Yugo2Heck
In 2002, I had received permission to ban "Yugo2Heck" from Shmack for dominating the server and driving away all the players. I was more or less waiting for the next time he would play numerous games back-to-back-to-back-to-back. Then a player inadvertently told me who this anonymous player was and I'm like "Hey, I know of that guy".
Jackhole
One day in 2003, someone new posts about GameStatus.Net. Later I discovered he had run servers I had played on and ran a messageboard I read with some frequency.

And this seems like a good stopping point because that's plenty
