Anyways I had to reboot the system into safe mode and yank all the [email protected] files and flush them and start over.

I went back and joined the HAT workforce.You get all the glory.

will you guys get a room? we're trying to be serious here. fuzz, the general public can share in the profits from medicines after 17 years, when patents expire. also, countries that don't have intellectual property enforcement can of course benefit. but yes they will commercialize your contribution and it will contribute to the power structures of society. my dad's job is actually to commercialize the research that comes out of universities, some of it partly government funded. foq, the analogy is flawed--medicines don't follow the same price reduction pattern as hardware because of the patent protection. most of the important things in your hardware are not patented.
about folding, yes you can make a contribution. but it's not like they're depending on you to fold any particular protein; they are going to accept the solutions that occur most frequently--so any protein you fold will likely also be folded by hundreds or thousands of other people. you rightly point out how easy it is to contribute, but it's that very ease of contribution that makes your contribution of so little value--many other people will download the program, since it's so easy, and the project's statistical pool will consist of huge numbers of people. as more people join, the value of your contribution decreases. better to contribute to a study that actually requires effort--like some sleep study or something

They make this newbie-friendly because they know the newbie-friendlyness will rake in more donators and therefore produce the most productivity.

As for my contribution becoming less and less every day, that is true, but that's not the right way of looking at it. Sure my worth as an individual user shrinks, but as more users join, the overall power of the [email protected] program grows.

Now wait a second. Will his little contribution shake the world? No. But it is something. And that's better than nothing. There are other things he could do to better effect I'm sure but this is just fine for now.
