  • Music Genre Suggestions....

For this thread I am asking for some suggestions for singers and bands to listen to in different music genres. Please don't criticize or otherwise bash any music genre or band - if you're going to do so, please put it in your own topic.

So I wanted to get a little deeper into a few music genres. I consider myself to be ecclectic - as in I listen to just about everything - but some of my areas need a little more work and I'd like some suggestions for singers and bands to listen to for those genres. I've got too much as far as Rock goes so I'm not looking for any new Rock bands.

    Metal
Right now I'm only listening to a "blackened death metal" band called Goatwhore. Although I admit I started listening to them because of the name, they're actually a really cool band and I love to listen to them. I originally started listening to Mudvayne, but I didn't like them that much and ended up getting rid of their CDs. The only other band I'm really into in the Metal genre is In Flames, but I don't listen to them that much either.

The only bands I've really considered getting into are Disturbed (although they're kind of a rock band), and Dimmu Borgir, who I have heard is a really cool "black metal" band, so hopefully they sound similar to Goatwhore. I'd really like to try another death metal band if anyone knows a good one.

    Indie
I'm only into one indie band right now but I absolutely love them - Interpol. Unfortunately I don't know any other bands so I'm willing to try any indie band.

    Country
So far I haven't been disappointed in the Country artists I've listened to. Right now I really like Trace Adkins and Gretchen Wilson - I listen to Trace more of the two but I like to pop in Gretchen every so often. I haven't really listened to very many Country artists but I'm considering listening to Big and Rich. I know a lot of people like Tim McGraw, but I'm not sure if I want to listen to someone who's as popular as he is. I kind of like less-known bands/artists. But as far as Country goes, I'd love to listen to just about anyone who gets recommended.

    Rap
So far I don't own any rap CDs, but I like a few artists: DMX, Ghostface Killah, and Xzibit. Of course I've also listened to Limp Bizkit a little. I plan to get one of DMX's albums, but other than him I'm not sure who else is cool.

    Hip-Hop
So far I've been impressed by the Hip-Hop artists I've listened to. Frenzy suggested Akon, who I really enjoy listening to, and also someone else suggested Lupe Fiasco, which I like his first album but haven't really gotten into the second yet. Other hip-hop artists I've been recommended are Common, Ghostface Killah, and Xzibit, so if anyone agrees that they are cool I'll give them a shot.

(Ghostface and Xzibit are listed as both Rap and Hip-Hop, so that's why I put them in both)

    Techno/Dance/Trance
I haven't gotten deep into Techno but I really like The Prodigy. As far as suggestions, the only person I've been suggested is Aphex Twin. I'd love a new Techno artist - I can definately get into this genre.

    Bluegrass
I enjoy a little bluegrass on occasion, but I'm not into very much yet. So far I like a band called The Cumberlands (although the album I have from them isn't a studio album but is a bunch of bluegrass renditions of Civil War songs), and a local band called Catfish Flats. I can definately get into bluegrass when I listen to it, but I want to make sure I get into a good band before I try anyone out.

    Punk
I put punk last because I'm really pretty good with it right now, but one more band would be great. Right now I like a lot of Punk bands - The F-Ups, The Explosion, Goldfinger, and The Offspring. I'm sure I'm missing someone. Anyway, any suggestions are cool. I especially like Goldfinger so anyone who sounds like them are cool.

    Any band/singer suggestions are appreciated!

Nine Inch Nails latest album Ghosts I-IV is really good, if your into instrumental music. I'm enjoying it, and I feel it's worth the 5$ download.

Hey quad, try out Opeth. Theyre a progressive death metal band. their music is kind of hard to describe, its not just metal, has 70s progressive rock influences, folk music, and other genres. The singer sings clean vocals and deep growling. It took me awhile to get into them, but once you do, they're a really beautiful and emotional band.

anyway heres a link to an album review - "Still Life" http://www.metal-observer.com/articl...sid=1&id=10087

that one really got me into opeth, brought almost to tears during the calm, heavenly acoustic part in the first track.

Opeth is my favorite band, the emotion and feeling they put into their music is almost unreal. Their lyrics aren't bad either, "Still Life" is a concept album with some lyrics I can relate to a bit.

      ================================

Also try out Camel and Yes for some good 70's Prog Rock. The Camel album I have is Camel - s/t, and I have Fragile by Yes.

tomorrow i'll throw out some more bands. I kind of don't like Dimmu Borgir personally, they're like "pop black-metal", they use cheesy symphonic stuff (some black metal bands use symphonics very well however) to make the music appeal to the general population whilst being of lower quality. I'll show you some good black metal like Immortal tomorrow maybe Check out Opeth though, amazing stuff if you ask me

ORL - Yeah I like NIN. Not a big fan but I'm familiar with their music. Might try that album since I like instrumental stuff.

Monst - Thanks, Opeth sounds like a great band. I really like progressive rock (big Asia and Yes fan) so they sound awesome! Definately one I'll pick up

Prince_Ali - I'm actually not familiar with any of those bands/artists. I'll definately look into some of them - wouldn't mind trying out some instrumental. Thanks for the suggestions!

                  Mindz -

Thanks! I could definately use some more Bluegrass so I'll look into those. I'll see about some of the other stuff you listed -a friend of mine is a huge Misfits fan so I'll probably check them out.

                  Omi -

I was considering getting into Rage since I'm already an Audioslave fan.
I'm familiar with some of those other metal bands you listed.

And I'll definately have to look into some of those indie bands! Thanks for listing them! I'm actually suprised about Radiohead - I didn't know they were considered Indie.

                  Sole -

Some bands are considered a genre when they don't seem like it - Great White for example is considered Metal as well.

lol, just like Bon Jovi was considered metal too,or Poison.

It's easier to like 1 song by a band, rather than the Band itself. There are rare occasions you'll like a Band in it entirety,or an entire album by a Band. For example, I dig Fear Factory and Otep, but some of their songs just simply suck, like Fear Factory's new album,I wouldnt recommend it,at all. P2P to test the waters is best, before shelling out $ for an entire album.

That's like me with Puddle of Mudd. I absolutely love "Blurry" and a few others but the rest of their songs are just too wierd to listen to.

I'm really not a huge Disturbed fan - it's really more of my brother's thing (if one of my brothers has already gotten into a band, I won't try to get into them out of respect). I really only want the CD "Ten Thousand Fists" for the song "Land of Confusion".

Of course, I could always just get the Genesis album with it....but I hate to admit I love Disturbed's version a little bit more.

I know a lot of people who like Scarface - might be one I'll check out. I'm not familiar with some of the others you listed though.
