  • Overclocking a NVidia card near you...

OK people, you DO NOT want to overclock your processor, ram, ANYTHING, usually. But if you have an NVidia card, you can overclock it. Only worth it for 128mb cards and lower!!
First, you want to go http://www.overclockers.com.au/techstuff/a_coolbits/ <-- there. Download the registry entry (it really does take less time to click on it, even on 300 BAUD ) well, click the registry entry once you download it to your computer. Then, open up your nvidia control pannel. Look for the Clock Frequences tab. My GPU was 325 MHZ and my RAM clock was 650 mhz. I gave the GPU 25 extra MHZ and the RAM 70 extra mhz. Doom3 was a bit laggy on Medium. Then I overclocked and it ran fine. (P4 2.8, 512mb ddr dual channel are my other specs)
WARNING: overclocking means you are feeding your video card a little bit more. That means: the video card is taking more power than normal to run at the higher frqeuencies, so it'll heat up faster. You ONLY want to do this, even overclocking "just a little bit", if your video card fan is in good condition. I myself, keep the side case off my tower and let the comp breathe a bit more. I also blow fresh air in it with a tower fan, and I have a fan in my window that blows in fresh air from outside as well. I'm doing a good job of keeping my stuff cool.
WARNING #2: If you decide to do this, first off you void your warranty (mine was already expired, and if you have a 256 or newer it's probally still in effect and everything is much faster than a 128 so you don't need to so it anyway. That's why it's only worth it for 128's and lower.) and, it heats up faster so if you din't take precautions to KEEP IT COOL, you may blow it up. Also, DO NOT BE REDICULOUSLY AGRESSIVE IN HOW MUCH YOU OVERCLOCK IT. Only overclock it a little bit. If you are still not satusfied, it's time for a new video card.

As a linux admin, I accidentally created an overclocking "feature" in a C program. When I ran it, everything went "DDOOOoooooo............". Stupid buggy programs

I don't think my ATI Radeon 9550 with 256 MB of ram has a fan attached to it. I know some of the newer ones do. I wouldn't want to risk that in case of fucking my computer up again.
