terrible graphics? how ignorant you are. with a response like that, you must be too stupid to figure out how to use a graphically enhanced engine like qrack or darkplaces, said FUCZK IT LOL and spend thousands of dollars on a machine that can play Crysis on max settings.

Quake actually had excellent graphics when it came out. You can't expect a game from 1996 to be able to graphically match games in 2008.

DarkPlaces REALLY comes close, but in the end, um do u need realtime lighting, shadows, dot3 bump map, etc to play dm3 crmod/ca?? NO.

Quake (multiplayer) is just what it is love it or hate it. It's right up there in the
learning curve with all the rest. The thing is that you cant brag about a game that looks basic to your pimp-brothers, and get any respect. In the end, you spend $700 for a rig just to play a game that'll be dead in a year.
in the mean time, quake will play on.

        A $700 rig can't play crysis :p
it might be able to but on crap settings

playing on low settings is never fun. it just looks like complete crap. at least in all the games I've ever played... try playing BF1942 on low, it looks all.. soupy or something

I was on a quake4 server and the top player out of 12 said "I'm going to Quake2..."

The majority of people still play also because not only do we know the game, we also know the other players. It's a fellowship. ASC i think i remember you, though if im not mistaken you were a good DM player, which was DM6 or DM3. In that regard I see your point, 2 maps dont make much of a game

Some players venture on not because they hate quake1 but they like newer maps, new player challenge, new features etc... heck sometimes I load up a commodore 64 emulator to play some oldtime favs!

          Ramp:
Hate me for my drunken rants and gripes, not the game. It's true, people have other things to deal with in life. I'm sorry if I pissed you off to the point where you cant enjoy the game for yourself. You've always been boisterous with your enthusiasm and I shouldn't try to piss on your fire

          edit: asc?

Hmm sounds like you are going to be bored of that game soon too
maybe you should get a pet rat or something to kick around...

It didn't have too much to do with you, I acknowledged in our PMs you were drunk for the most part.

It had to do with gangsta coming into CTF and trash talking several people, as well as recruiting people for his game when CTF is already dead its self and hanging on by a thread of sunday night games.

It also has to do with the overall community. All the shit talk between such a small community kills any nostalgic feelings I had towards the game (riot, nate, lennox, iov, intensity, DOOM) days.

I also think I was way overdue to quit the game. I don't feel challenged in terms of where my skill level is at and that is not to belittle anyone here, it is merely my personal perception.

I sincerely hope that one day ill be looking at this site and every server is popular and thriving with people.

My point exactly, you wouldnt pay $700 for a rig to run MAME, Quake is solid gameplay with '96 gfx, ++ after open source. In the end who cares about realtime shadows etc, this is Quake 1 lets just play the game as is!

How ignorant AND presumptuous YOU are.

                  1) I've used shitty things like qrack plenty of times. The graphics are enhanced. That doesn't make them good.

                  2) Yes, quake HAD excellent graphics in 1996. We're now in 2008. The graphics are TERRIBLE now. Where did I say I expect anything from quakeone, graphically? I simply stated those of us who have powerhouse computers can't be hanging around for that reason.

                  3) I didn't spend thousand on anything for any specific game. Nice try though.

                  Stupid ******.

and what the fuck are you guys talking about? Load times? Man. I'd rather wait for 20 seconds for a game to load and have 3,000 servers full of people than have zero load time and play on ONE of FOUR possible servers, none of which will be full, save for a very rare occassion. I played quake for a billion years. I know damn well how hard it can be to get a solid game of quake going, and it's not nearly as easy as you're implying

Quake had bad graphics the day Half-Life came out 10 years ago

Please don't tell me you just now noticed this?

It's funny how when one expresses his mere opinion, he is labeled as a troll and viewed as an antagonist.

He is entitled to his opinion, don't personally attack him because he believes the graphics are bad, servers are lacking players, and the community is full of drug-addicted asswipes.

Asc has a lot of valid points, defend the game, but don't personally attack what I believe are very credible statements to why the game is suffering.

I like to think that we don't have the handicap of needing the current best graphics to enjoy a game. Though, I do admit that the community could be much wider and tolerable.

Not necessarily that, but the way he curses us is kind of proof.
