  • Drought

Anyone else having a drought right now? Mobile has been in one for a few weeks now. There are showers around us, but they keep going north due to cold fronts so we only had like .24 of an inch of rain in March. And this week it will continue to be like that.

The worst thing is that we're having a bunch of wildfires starting because of it.

(Edit, got my info wrong. It wasn't 24 inches, it was .24 of an inch, a record for Mobile)

You guys are losers, I live in Arizona. Our drought kicks your drought's ass. You're complaining about 24 inches of rain in a month? We only get 2-3 inches a year.

              That's normal for you, though.

Mobile is supposed to be one of the wettest cities in the country, next to Seattle, WA. This is unusual weather for us.

Parched. These days no other word fits better on the Gulf Coast. National Weather Service meteorologist Randy McKee told us, " We'll probably break the all time record for having the driest March ever in Mobile and Pensacola."

Those records have stood more than 100 years. The numbers in 2006 are nothing less than shocking. Not even a quarter inch of rain has been measured at the official stations.

One of the reasons for the dry weather is simple.. not enough cold fronts. " For March not to have strong cold fronts to come through and stir up the instabilities which create thunderstorms and heavy rain, without that you get dry weather." McKee said.

Another cause is a global player called La Nina. This cooling of Pacific waters creates drier conditions along the Gulf Coast... but that's not all. " That gets a little complicated but the bad part of La Nina is that it can mean an active hurricane season, and we already knew that." McKee said.

Typically, April and May are dry months, so relief from the drought may be slow to happen.

Ask for rain, you get a monsoon. Ask for the floods to stop, a drought follows.

Vancouver is indeed pretty nice these days.

British Columbia dries up every summer, and there are always tons of wildfires. You can usually see the fires from the highway.
