I've seen a lot movies and the number of movies made before 1980 that would still be interesting today is very slim. I'm not saying there aren't any, because there are, but the farther back you go, in general, the fewer.

I think I've seen Gone With The Wind twice, and it was forcible *laugh* each time in the sense that I hated it (and would have left had I had the free will to do so :d).

Put that stuff in a museum because it is only valuable as a socialogy experiment!!! :d

The only movies I can think of that were made before 1970 that were any good:

    1. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
    2. Planet of the Apes
    3. 2001: A Space Odyssey
    4. and maybe ... Lawrence of Arabia
And the ones made between 1970-1979:

    1. Invasion of the Body Snatchers
    2. The Exorcist
    3. Star Wars movies, of course
    4. Alien
    5. James Bond movies from then probably
If you watch older movies like Dirty Harry, they are interesting but only from the perspective of understanding the times and looking at what sort of cars they drove back then.

I'm sure 20 years from now, the movies made around this time will be viewed as too dated.

Things like Jurassic Park will be looked at as "crappy" like the way people view the original King Kong that looks like some man dressed up in an outfit.

Maybe I missed a couple of outstanding movies from those times that actually would have real entertainment value today, but there wasn't anything else I could think of.

I haven't seen ANY of those movies. I've seen the new Planet Of The Apes, but it totally sucked. Me and my friend just quit watching it halfway through. was ridicolous.

My favourite movies are from the 70s. You know, Godfather, Deer Hunter...These movies were made before the cheesy action era that we're still in, back before movies were influenced by...*shudder*...comics. I would take a good 70s movie before a modern movie (not quite) any day. There are some good modern ones too

Jason and the Argonauts! That's a good one, but don't get me started on 1980's movies, particarly 80's horror ( which owns todays horror flix by far ) because I don't think you would take the time to read such a long post.
I'll just say George A. Romero and leave it at that.

Night of the Living Dead :1968
          Dawn of the Dead: 1978

Oh and the Planet of the Apes remake is the ONLY Tim Burton movie I didn't like.

Clockwork Orange is a good movie, but probably not for every one. The first time I saw it, I found it really disturbing.

Annie Hall ---> that was an interesting movie.

A movie that I IMDB'ed to check the "born-on" date was Arthur. Seems like a 1970's movie, but it was made in the early 1980's. As it turns out, Dudley Moore is dead. I had no idea. He died in something like November 2002.

Dudley moore died from a progressive nerve disease. It wasn't pretty to watch.

I watched "dazed and confused" again recently. Another great movie.

Those movies you point out were great. If you really want to get freaked out, watch Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and then ---> Return of the Living Dead

The 1985 Return of the Living dead is immensely scary. Twice as much if you had recently seen the first 3.

In the first 3, the zombies move slow and are easy to kill. In the 1985 sequel, the first 3 movies are just movies that have the facts wrong about a true incident, and thru an accident, the zombies return.

shame no one mentioned Gargoyles or Duel, two quality 1972 movies.

Treasure of the Sierra Madre(194 is one of the best films ever made. Excellent depiction of desperation amongst working class in the west and the edges of sense when any sense of humanitarian behavior breaks down. Also coined the phrase "Badges? We dont need no stinking badges!"

The Haunting(1963) is one of the scariest movies Ive ever seen because it lacks blood or any special effects. Its all in pacing, the sense of isolation of the characters, and the wonderful use of sound. "Its looking for a room with someone in it..."

Miracle on 34th Street(1947) is a masterful film about Santa Claus (still working on the one about SantaClaws), but more so a comedy about commercialization, the judicial system, and a subtle drama regarding family and faith.

Patton(1970). If you dont know this then you just failed highschool history.

                            Possibly

Though Id say Patton's role in the whole of World War 2 makes him noteworthy for any study of the war that isnt just a general overview.

Seen it I'm a huge horror fan. The red head was nice too :d
My 2 Favorite horror flicks= Day of the Dead & John Carpenter's The Thing
(speaking to everyone) Even if you're not a John Carpenter fan [which I am FAR from] you've GOT to see this movie! Had me sweating the first time.
Starts out a bit slow though kinda like Evil Dead

Edit: Oh yeah you should check out Peter Jackson's first US release also: Dead Alive (the goriest fright film ever made)
                              It's a slow starter too :\
