Something that has always struck me is the popularity of the original Half-Life. I know when I got the game originally, the box looked cool as hell.
And it was one of the few games that was as cool as the box.
Anyone who has ever played that game remembers the train ride in the beginning the walk thru the facility.
Late at night (5:00 AM Eastern USA) -- pretty much nothing going on at any type of Quake server, not even in Team Fortress which once used to be a sure bet on a 24/7 game --- I decided to check GameSpyArcade.

And, even for a game that is almost as old as Quake, Half-Life has 36000 players in the middle of the night.
Notably, Half-Life 2 has almost nothing going on. I didn't post a pic, but Quake 4 and Doom 3 have almost nothing going on either (66 players, 55 players respectively). Quake 3 has 1954 players on.
You can still buy Half-Life (the first one) in a store or on the internet. You can't still buy Quake.
(Quake is not sold in stores and the only place that sells it new, the ID Software site, has been down for about 2 weeks and who knows when it will come back up).
I think there would be more Quake players if you could buy Quake in a store, but probably nearly as not as many as Half-Life. That's beside the point.
Doom 3, Quake 4, Half-Life 2 ... as cool as the graphics and special effects are, no one appears to be playing the multiplayer.
