  • Toothpaste & Thermal Paste

A few of you know I've had problems with my computer for a while now...

Well I finally got up the nerve to detail my entire computer with cue-tips, toothpicks(wooden) and good old fashioned hot air from the lungs. I've had this computer for about 4-5 years now and have never serviced it(not even with a can of duster). It needed it.

Long story short, after debating whether or not to pull the cooling unit off the cpu (or whatever it's called), I went for it. Broke the thermal paste seal and all. There was practically nothing there. To the touch, the thermal paste would crumble off both sides it was attached to. Freaking out because I had no thermal paste, I decided to use toothpaste (of the gel variety). Made sense to me, they seem to have fairly similar chemical properties. Lo-and-behold, it worked. And is still working. On top of that, that was my problem the whole time, not proquake, or IE8, or my vid-card. The dust and the old thermal paste.

After getting back online, I googled this idea to see if it was safe. Found some tech-board and a guy gave his story of doing it and everyone else said he was joking or that he should take it back because "someone might actually do this and end up wrecking something".

So is this really that dangerous? Guy on the tech-board said it's good for 2-3 months, it'll dry and so on... I plan on buying some thermal paste today, I have no intention of the other being a permanent fix.

One last thing.. thanks to all that helped and tried to help. For the record, Foqer nailed this from very early on, but he made it sound scary to do it so I swore I wouldn't be the one touching it. Someone recently, actually walked me through what it was I have specifically and actually kinda gave me the gumption to do it. I think it was Mav, or Phenom or someone. Anyway, thanks again guys.

It was probably that stock crap that they put on the stock heatsink when you first buy a processor (if it was custom built)

If I was you, I'd spend the $50 and buy a good aftermarket heatsink and fan, its cheap, and you'll never have cooling issues - even if you decide to OC.

You'll need to find the right one for your processor though (they each have different mounting)

If not, here's the thermal paste that all PC builders swear by:

What did I make sound scary?

Use MX-2. It has better thermal transfer than Arctic Silver, there's no "curing" time, and best of all, it's non-conductive. It's also easier to clean up and apply.

hah that is pretty funny. toothpaste seems more fluid than thermal paste to me but kudos for trying it and winning. I wouldn't bother investing $50 for a cooling unit in a 5 year old computer, since you can get a new, bottom of the line pc for a couple hundred bucks.

I wouldn't spend $50 for a cooler in an old computer either. Hell, I only paid $20 for my aftermarket cooler (AC Freezer 64 Pro).

Its as dangerous as it sounds, yes. Toothpaste isn't designed to deal with the temps from your CPU! Especially over time Though obviously its working, make sure you remember to get that thermal paste on ASAP!

hey at least it'll keep those nasty buildups of plaque from forming on his cpu....

temps are about 70-72 celsius, the same they were before the toothpaste, which is obviously hotter than i would like it to be.

Goes to show you how bad of a TIM toothpaste is. After cleaning out a computer form 5 years of dust buildup, you still get the same temps as you had before :p

i used mayonase as a thermal paste. not only does it dissipate heat, it makes my cpu smell like a nice and juicy blt...

you could try using some peanut butter, but arctic silver should do the trick,
remember to clean the cpu and heatsink contact, i use rubbing alcohol and some q-tips, and coffee filters to wipe off the cpu.
