    Ugh... agreeing with tical...

Yes, as far as typing up papers for school and browsing the internet goes, a netbook will do just fine. The only problem with this is that some people complain that netbooks are too small, so see if she would mind having a netbook for that reason. Other than that, it's perfect.

And as others have said... personally installed windows ftw. 30 day trials of over 9000 programs and bouncing bunnies are not ftw.

I'll come out as being very un-keen on netbooks. A number of our users saw the attraction and demanded them, they were high-up enough to get what they wanted, and they've done nothing but complain. Horizontally I suppose the screen-size is OK, but when you're working on a document (or reading anything on-screen) you need vertical real-estate.

i went to bestbuy with my younger sister, everything works fine, only problem is they dont come with drives, but when she's over here, she hooks up on my network, and i share the dvd drive so she can install over network...pretty simple....keyboard is smaller, but its still nice. its cheap and does the job thats all that counts. thanks for some backup.

It depends on what the person's doing with the machine. Sometimes you need to be able to keep a full page of a document on-screen and at a legible font-size. A netbook may be perfectly fine for many other purposes, but I don't believe one would cut it for what the OP's sister wants.

I recommend going with a Dell D Series laptop. Their not the latest and greatest, nor the bottom of the barrel. In my company, as a Desktop Support guy, our best laptops have been these.

You can get refurbished for cheap.

Yeah, there aren't any optical drives for a netbook, which could be a problem, heh...

This one obviously does not have a floppy drive.

Agree. That's what I've said in my post before. I have Dell Inspiron 10.1" for my college work. I bought it on ebay for $260 (brand new). And I have no problems so far.

It has external CD-RW which is enough, I think.

My work computer is a Dell Latitude D630. Had one problem with it about a year into it - needed a new motherboard. With next-day Dell Business warrenty (whatever it's called) it was replaced and I was working again! Haven't had any other issues with it. I like it for work. Although I'm still biased and loving my personal Thinkpad.
