Back in the pre-Internet days... there were local BBS's (Bulletin Board System) you could connect to with your 300 - 14400 bps modem... I ran a wildcat! one called Twin Swords BBS.
There were multi-node MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons) that you could interact with people using ASCII/ANSI &/or RIP graphics.
One of my most favourite games was LORD (Legend of the Red Dragon).
Seeing that Quake 1 hits almost every topic conceivable... I was like.... has anyone ever made a Quake MUD? And sure enough... yes.
