The winter solstice holiday in Roman times evolved to become Christmas; the vernal equinox holiday in Roman times evolved to become Easter.
Both of those holidays which were retro-fitted in Roman and Medieval Times to have religious significance [and if you think about it, both holidays have mascots (Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny)].

Asatru is a Pagan religion, like Wicca, but the main difference is that Asatru has a lot of gods, who are seen very much like individuals, while Wicca usually has a God and a Goddess (or all goddesses are ultimately the same, if I understood that correctly). Also, magic isn't necessarily a part of Asatru, while I think it's somewhat central to Wicca. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Unlike Wicca, Asatru has no covens and no initiation. There are no priests or churches, either (at least here in Europe there aren't). Every person can talk to the gods just like that. Goddesses are of equal importance as gods.
This "religion" has no concept of sin or eternal punishment. There are no Commandments and there is no holy book. There is not much in the way of rituals, except giving offerings (usually small amounts of food or drink). There is nothing secret or occult about Asatru.
It's an officially recognized religion in places like Denmark and Iceland, which is somewhat logical as it's Northern European in origin.Comment
