  • Interesting SUV/Gas/War Picture

I don't really have opinions on this. Thought it was an interesting picture floating around the internet.

I think 20% of the power in the USA comes from nuclear, and this is despite that I don't think there has a new nuclear power plant in the US since maybe the 1970's.

What's the big deal in building these if we already use them? Other countries have them.

The price of gas anymore is pretty unbareable.

I find it really stupid why the president doesn't make people use hybrid cars. I want a hybrid car for 2 reasons. 1: by the time I'm able to get a car the gas prices will be like $6.00 a gallon. 2: No air pollution. Everyone is just sitting around complaining about the gas prices... DO SOMETHING!! GET a hybrid that gets like 85 mpg+!!

If you drive long distances, a hybrid won't help you any. Going long distances on highways will still require the gas engine and gasoline.

Someone also told me that the batteries in hybrid cars only last so many years. Once the battery goes you have to buy a new one which costs several grand $$. Anyone know if that's true? I don't feel like researching this on a Sunday morning.

Don't worry. There will come out with new, better ones, if there arent any already.

the president isnt stupid enough to throw his money and his friends money away by forcing people to buy cars which would cause the oil companies to sell less

of course they would probably just jack the price up so you wouldnt end up saving any money

Hybrids still have issues to get worked out. I know that they are a lot better than ever, a couple of models could be a replacement car.

But what happens if you need it fixed? How much do the batteries cost? What if you get in a minor car wreck -- how much does it cost/how long does it take to get all those expensive batteries and the rest of the stuff under the hood repaired if it gets damaged?

Also, I've heard you can't recharge the batteries via plugging them in a outlet. Why not? Why can they only recharge via driving?

There are some excellent cars that get about 40 MPG while cutting no corners, like the very popular Toyota Corolla.

I'd know when hybrids are ready for prime time when a lot of people have them.

In my opinion hybrids are not the answer. The industry must shift towards ethanol (there are many Ethanol stations in America already and some cars can run exclusively on ethanol, the amazing cop cruiser Crown Victoria for example) Yes this is not an easy solution and there is no way to produce enough ethanol yet, but you can get it from corn and such and its basically what you drink in the bars so you know.... Ethonal burns cleaner, less CO2, and is renewable. I love the idea of saving the environment but I HATE pod cars.

Earth will run out of resources one day. One day in the distant future. By then, we will probably be colonizing distant planets like mars, the moon, and getting help by aliens.

Listen I've done reading on this gas thingy

I live in Chicago, the gas here in the city is 3.00+ a gallon. Out in the suburbs gas goes from 2.80-2.95 right now. The E85 Ethanol still has gasoline mixed into
it. For example in the summer time the mix at the gas station is running 80% ethanol, and 20% gasoline. Winter time 70/30 mixture. The problem with Ethanol is all these people see the huge price drop and want the supply. It's stated in some magazine won't be enough supply for the consumers demand.
Here we have 3 stations that take it and the price ranges from 1.70-1.79 a gallon.

All new 2006 GM's take ethanol
All new 2006 Ford Taurus, F-150, and Crown Victoria take ethanol

If you have one of these run your gas damn near empty in your tank then fill up with e85. <3

                    ETHANOL burns faster.
This body holding me,reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment, remember, we are eternal, all this pain is an illusion.

No we won't, all of our resources actually come from the sun. ALL of them.

If oil came from dinosaurs or plankton, those were dependent on the sun for energy like all plants and everything that eats plants in the food cycle.

So ... we just need to do a better job of using them. Solar power is NOT the only sun derived energy source, wind and weather cycles are a result of the sun as well. At least, that's what I understand.

Btw ... we suck at using solar power. From what I've read, we can't even harness even a decent fraction of the energy that actually gets to solar panels, it's like 0.001% or something.

Yes, but it all takes billions and billions of years to renew all of that oil. That why they are called non-renewable resources!

Something I heard of once, don't know how it works though, but is a kind of van that was made to use the old grease from restaurants as a fuel supply.

Oh here it is - it runs on vegitable oil.

Yeah, I've heard of that before... One of my Dad's friends used to go to a chinese food place and get a ton of vegetable oil to use as fuel. Odd.
