  • Super Inexpensive Web Host

I was chatting around with Spirit on qw.nu and this whole "Trinca's DM map archive is down" thing make me think and start looking around.

I was *shocked* at what I found:

    http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/HostingOverview

$2.99 per month or $35.88 per year
250 GB of monthly transfer. Yes that is NOT a typo
5 GB of hard drive space
Additionally, it only costs $6 per year to get a domain from them.

And, I've used them for years with a free account I got from Gohan telling us all about 1and1.com's 3 year free offer. I'm not the only one: Diazoild, Bam and others got these free accounts too.

I have NEVER had a single problem with them or the site being down.

By the way, 1and1.com is a massive web host. It is my understanding they are the largest in the United States, Europe and the world.

The price will most certainly go up though. Watch.

Hosting prices NEVER go up. They always go down.

As bandwidth and hard drive spaces become less expensive, the cost goes down.

No server host is an island, if they did that then people would switch to another web host provider.

Whenever I paid for a server, the host would never be on top of my requests. So I paid one of them a visit and they were so shocked, they got to work right away. I'm paying for your service! SHOW ME SATISFACTION!

Now I just host servers at multiple locations which I have control over.

Monster, technology prices ALWAYS go down. The most grandest ststem today may be 20 grand, but the future grandest will be like 15 grand (EXAMPLE BISHES)
the top-of-the-line processors back in the day could be up to 1000$.
Today, my uncle owns a 64 bit pentium D (dual core) 3GHZ 2mb L2 cache (L2 is memory on the processor, helps it move anong) and the insanely fast 800 FSB speed. 400$. My processor, considered good but nothing truly special today, a p4 2.8 1mb l2 cache 533 FSB was like... well...

Mine is the first one, just not 64-bit

$35.88 per year is not going to get you "service". It gets you a very solid self-help package with PHP, FTP and the other usuals.

It comes with a kickass (although I've seen better once) control panel with many features, a lot of installable software, etc.

But personal attention doesn't come with $35.88 per year.

Comes with the features they indicate. Sure you can email them for help, but they are just going to direct you to documents.

            Service costs $$$$.

The catch to the 1&1 hosting is the size of the databases...

              MySQL Database (100 MB)
I guess that's not a big deal for most people, but for a busy web site with forums and stuff, that is kinda small. My other website (www.creedfeed.com) has around an 80 meg database due to the hundreds of thousands of posts in the vBulletin forum.

Other than that though, that is a great deal. Baker, hop on IM... should we get a hosting package there?

I lied about the 80 MB size... it's actually 182.3 MB to be exact lol My forum has over 10,000+ threads with 300,000+ posts. The db table which stores post info is in itself 88 MB. I also allow people to upload attachments which comes in around 30 MB or so. I've never deleted any old posts on the forum so that's why it's so big.

Well, I wondered about your sanity

You might consider deleting logs in the database if there are. I had 20mb to delete at Quaddicted once =)

Not sure what you mean by logs but vBulletin doesn't keep "logs" in the sense of usage data or anything like that. Like I said, the size of the DB is due to the huge number of posts... I never deleted any posts because my users like to be able to search and view old topics.
