  • Slipknot and Mudvayne

When I was young, I knew many people who liked the Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls. I couldn't stand pop music, so I started to listen to bands like Kid Rock and Linkin Park. But, to a degree, Kid Rock and Linkin Park are also pop artists. I discovered Slipknot and Mudvayne on the internet... (Finally, two bands that I really appreciate.) When I first listened to Slipknot, I thought that they mixed Marilyn Manson's content with Korn's nu metal style. I loved it. I like Slipknot's old songs more than their new songs. Iowa, in my opinion, is one of the best metal albums ever.

I listen to Slipknot and Mudvayne when I feel angry. Their songs make me feel better. Sometimes I can have a bad day at work. Sometimes I'm pissed off in general. I need to listen to Slipknot and Mudvayne. But I also listen to them when I'm in a good mood because their songs give me a bursting feeling of energy. (Have you read their lyrics? Their songs really are brutal.)

Finally, rest in peace Paul Gray. (He used to be a bassist for Slipknot.) He will be missed by many folks.

Slipknot and Mudvayne are just as mainstream as Back Street Boys and Spice Girls.

        Sorry, bro.

I know, my reply was preposturous. But then again, arguing that Slipknot isn't the basic genre of Metal is just as preposturous, so I took a shortcut to a preposturous reply.

That's the least wittiest sarcasm I've ever seen, Slipknot is metal. Fact!

who cares if its metal, there are bands past and present who are miles ahead in terms of musicianship compared to these shitty bands, i never got into debating what was true metal vs false, i'm mainly concerned with musicianship,

if you like metal or guitar shredders here are some bands to listen to:
power metal / classic: sonata arctica, helloween, iron maiden
technical metal: theory in practice, cephalic carnage, necrophagist,
progressive metal/rock: dream theater, gentle giant
shred guitar: racer x, jason becker, steve vai, greg how
                    and other musical stuff:
jazz fusion: pat metheny, allen holdsworth,
acoustic finger picking: michael hedges , pierre bensusan

if down tuned guitar-simple riffs are your thing then you will not like the above mentioned bands, but if you want to discover great music start exploring these bands

Being myself a metalhead, having a collection of THOUSANDS of vinyls, cds, tapes, fanzines etc.... and someone telling me that Slipknot is metal, is like a virgin trying to teach to Peter North how to have sex

Who cares what the genre is? Good music is good music and crap music is crap music, doesn't matter if you call it metal or Uzbekistani Arse Flute music.

Meh, I guess I'll ad my 2 cents.

As a composer, producer, lover of music and metal connoisseur I'd have to say I agree with both points of view.

The elitist metalhead in me says they are not metal. The objectivist in me says they are. Practically speaking, the music they play contains most of the key features of the genre. These days metal is a very broad genre, there are a lot of lame bands out there that metal purists would call metal. "Metal" isn't a holy title that would somehow be "tarnished" by the likes of these bands. Music is not fundamentally good because it is metal. These bands are metal.

The real question is "are they good metal?"...but that's another story *cue never ending story theme*
