EN MASSE. EA Games to begin supporting Linux/Ubuntu outofbox !!!!
[Phoronix] EA Begins Their (Sad) Ubuntu Game Push

I wondered when any version of linux (debian or not) would garner out of box support from game developers. Thats the only reason why Ubuntu and other variants are NOT viable options for a modern PC gamer. It's simply not worth the effort, most consumers are drones and demand it work out of box. They paid for a fun/fail free experience. Buying headaches need not apply!

I posted earlier about how Steam is headed torwards Linux, well its happening again, and this time its a HUGE game publisher/developer power house, with enough $ to throw at the situation until its been molded into .....

Valve wouldn't make such a thing without a reason.

My guess is that the reason is a long-term bet, not a short-term one.

Since Valve's true customer base are game makers, they need to have an avenue to support game-makers who make a Linux version.

View this mostly as an ability to service game publisher choices, whatever they happen to be and where they want to market their game.

Unless manufacturers decide to sell Ubuntu laptops and software makers make Linux Photoshop and so forth, you aren't going to see any change in operating system market shares.

I think Valve's decision has more to do with Desura than anything else. This isn't going to make Windows games run on Linux. Just make it so those that do make Linux games can distribute them without using something other than Steam.

Photoshop is off the table, and Adobe is no longer developing Flash for Linux Firefox. There will never be a Netflix client, either.

If EA games is moving support to Linux like they have to Macintosh, lets hope they don't use Cider -_- Cuz you know, easier to stick 'Nix systems with a crappy emulation port of the windows version than it is to take the time, money and care to do a proper port.
        God be with you Ireland...

Time and money to make a Linux port ...

          1. Desktop Linux usage in USA = maybe 1% or maybe 0.5% or maybe 0.25% depending how you try to measure it. (Like how does one measure or count dual-booting with Windows, etc.)

          2. Linux usage in Eastern Europe = maybe 15% or 20% ... not too bad.

          3. But Eastern Europe has the "Pirate Bay culture" of stealing movies/games. There are some legitimate parts to objective the way copyright functions in the world. But there are also some non-legitimate arguments.

So the only part of the world where Linux has a meaningful marketshare is the same part of the world that feels they are entitled to "steal your game" and everything in the whole world should be free.

Is that going to work out to be a successful market? I don't know if anyone has tried so maybe there isn't a real-life example of whether or not trying to sell a game for Linux can be done. But I don't know of any "we sold a ton of games on Linux" success stories and you'd think if one existed it would be talked about a lot.

The only reason people steal EA's Mac games is because... they suck. They aren't worth paying 50 dollars for xD They are slow, crippled emulation layered windows versions of the games.

Though I KNOW you have a point, Valve wouldn't be wasting their money doing "proper native" ports to Linux and even Macintosh if it were all true. The fact of the matter is, EA is just a lazy, greedy company. I hope I'm wrong but, from the EA games I have played on Mac (Warhammer, Spore, ect) its just horrible.

Not claiming this is going to happen with Linux but, I wouldn't hold my breath, either. Some guy did a Wineport of Warhammer for Mac that ran better than EA's version of the game, and EA charged money for it -_-

The main point is, game developers/publishers are starting to take Ubuntu/Linux seriously as a viable gaming platform.

The reason games for mac suck? Cuz mac's aren't for gaming. It's like buying a VW beetle for drag racing, don't expect much.

                  ^ LOL

Um, no, that isn't the reason they suck. DOOM 3, Serious Sam 3, all run great on Mac. All high end graphic games.

Why? Because they aren't ported using Cider. Its great people are taking Linux more seriously, but I'm just trying to warn people about EA.

If you want to be a smart arse about it, never mind.

As far as I know, linux is about as good for gaming as a Macintosh if not less, so, if you wanna rock that boat, be my guest xD

A shitty windows -> nix port from a shitty console -> windows port. Sounds great!

Actually I think that has happened before. It was called Duke Nukem Forever.

                      Wait...

Seriously though, its great Linux is getting steam, as for EA, meh. If it brings more games to linux, great. Don't care for EA though.
