    134 users online, 124 guests...hmm.

I know this may counter-productive, but we should require someone to be logged in to read the threads. Maybe help put a stop to trolling. I realize that could be seen as counter-productive. Maybe leave one thread open that explains our community to "guests" but lock the rest from view unless your registered and signed in. Just my 2 pennies, maybe help put a end to all that anonymous trolling.

Doing that prevents Google and other bots from spidering the web site. I think the goal of the site was to be a source for people to use for learning about quake. Locking it down would be counterproductive in that sense.

Yes, I understand that Solecord and thats why I briefly touched upon it. I am not saying lock it down so you can only see the front page. I think many of the links, like downloads, news archives, server listings and quake help should all be accessible. The forums are the key source for many of us in this community but as can be seen (and yes I'm guilty) theres negativty on the forums that really shouldnt be open to the general public without a understanding. Plus it would be nice if we had a chance to bring all those lurking guests in and make them a part of us. By not requiring a person to register and sign in to view the forums, we are losing the chance to get new people as they may just come view one thread and their gone for good.

I understand what you're saying, but the quoted text above is key... people won't as easily come across the site if search engines can't index the forum content. Threads posted in the subforums Quake Help, Servers and Coding, Quake Clients, etc. are key to us being found by users through search engines. Several of our top landing pages are forum threads specific to certain topics/phrases users searched for via Google. If we turn off public viewing of the forums, we won't get indexed and thus people won't stumble upon the site...

I think the real issue here is moderation. Myself and the other admins/mods need to ensure the forums stay relatively clear of too much negativity. I myself haven't been spending enough time on the site as I should be. I just got a new laptop at home so it'll be easier for me to spend more time taking care of business here.

You can give the bot user permissions. This is how my clan forum (different game) works and it gets indexed perfectly.

I know that you can give bots user permissions, but doing quick research on this topic says that Googlebot should see exactly what humans see when they load a URL. If they see different content than a human would see (by default), you can get flagged for cloaking and get penalized. It's not a good idea to do that.

I'm happy for the 3 new recent recruits , Dan, FBI Guy, and CodyThePianoMan. I know for a fact that Dan arrived to our community by means of search engine because he only had Shareware Q1 http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-hel...l-win-7-a.html

I sent him to Steam with a fist full of $1 bills

                    keep it the same <3

We need a home-page permanent link to Steam Buy Q1 !! "Buy Quake Now!"

Baker told me some month ago, as I asked him about the high amount of users in this forum:
90% of them are not living ones

That is exactly what I think too.
And closing the forums to interested people that wants to read a bit about Quake should be avoided at all costs.
I fully agree with Solecord here.

                        Ask yourself the question:
If you browse the internet and find some uselful things and a forum doesnt allow you to read it; who would register just to read something ?
If so, we would have hundreds of non-poster that only registered with a junk mail adress to be able to read one thread. And then they will never be back.

We have nothing to hide, do we ?
"Negative" postings ? Do you think this is different in other forums ?
I like the forum as it is (except some missing features, hehe).

You have to click on link which takes you to page 1 of that topic then click the last page to get to the end of it.
Nope. Click this and it will bring you to the first unread (by you) post of the topic.

3/4 of the posts are garbage, fighting, bickering, useless
3/4? Not hardly. Maybe more like 1/16. I feel your pain though. Also, you are here. You have the power to make posts. Be the change you want to see in the world. This goes for anybody that hardly posts, but feels there are few good ones. Go write your awesome post that I want to contribute to.
