Ahhh a topic for me, since i own a trucking business. Yes yes very hard to find drivers, the FMCSA has made test now days extremely hard to get a CDL CLASS A license. In my opinion its for the best, i get tired of seeing idiots on the road ways driving potential lethal weapons. School cost alot, i just put my wife in school in janurary this year, total cost was $4,963. My school years ago only costed my $2,400 including the cost of the hotel where i stayed at. The trucking industry is not for everyone and alot of people come out here get a CDL and then quit after a few months to go back home and find a local job. Well now days its hard to find a local job without EXPERIENCE. Pepsi, Coke, Budwieser, waste management, miller, and several local companies now days will not hire a CDL driver without 2 years OTR 'over the road' experience. Again in my opinion thats great. Id rather a new guy be on OPEN HIGHWAYS, learning how to manuever and control a 40 ton rig then driving one around town all day long on congested roads while not knowing how to control the rig. I have 8 years experience and i still find trouble spots depending on the situation. I prefer being long haul over local, 3 reasons. 1) the industry needs long haul drivers as article states, 2) more money, especially as a company owner, 3) i enjoy sight seeing and going long distances and traveling. I also have a few friends who drive local and make about $400-$800 a week before taxes, and struggle to live life. My drivers make on average $1100-1400 a week before taxes. So about $900-1200 take home. Its a choice and a whole different life style out here. Truckers do it best, if we did not how do you have the things you have? It doesnt drive itself!

Oh and to add, yea we dont have a life, but the money we or even i make is well worth while. I see an early retirement in 2020 or at age 40, however i feel when it comes time. Hardest part is trying to maintain a healthy and physically fir body, yeah ive gained a bit of weight, but i dont eat unhealthy or even drink carbonated/caffine drinks. Just water and sometimes milk. Lack of excersize is my biggest problem. Ive gained 40lbs in 8 years, guess i cant be to upset, ive seen guys come out here at 200lbs and in 1 year gain 50-60lbs from eating junk at truck stops or eating all fast food. Fok mcdonalds, wendys, burger king, buy healthy stuff and eat in your truck, maintain 1800 calories or less a day.. Drink lots of water and enjoy the view, slammin gears and hammer down, big papas comin to town.

Just lost 20lbs, just by cutting out snack foods - especially potato chips and corn chips. Those latter things are one of the biggest offenders in this country's obesity epidemic, IMO, and we don't realize how fattening the stuff is.

I dont even eat chips. Have not in probably 5-6 years. My prob is lack of excersize and pasta. I eat pasta like 3 times a week, alfredo, ziti, lasagna, you name a pasta i tear it up! And i usually eat 1 meal a day with no snacks, also bad for you.. Eventually ill hire 2 more drivers and im gettin off the trucks, but for now i still enjoy it.. Take my vitamins and walk a little is all i can do to stay somewhat healthy.

Too many 'boys' these days and not enough 'men'. Men understand what needs to be done to take care of themselves and their families, boys do not. Truckers can make excellent money as a company driver, my first year driving i took home just shy of $50,000. Of course i own 5 trucks now and make more, it was hard work but i got what i wanted. 200,000 jobs and 11 million capable unemployed people, would significantly reduce those numbers by getting off their ass and get a CDL and drive.
