  • IRC (Split out) ...

You're aware of the channel #darkplaces at irc.anynet.org?

If you seriously want to talk to LH or any other person, there are very simple ways to accomplish that. You're expecting him to come to your house because you want to talk with him; how about you go to his house instead.

If you're not using IRC, you're missing out big time. People are laughing at you on IRC, maybe you should get your collective asses on there.

Good place to start is irc.anynet.org #qc.

[Baker: I moved this out of the thread about all the hardwork several people put into the SMC for DarkPlaces and there already enough posts off-topic to derail those guys. I don't want Splitterface, Seven, etc. annoyed answering the questions about their work... so I split this out.]

My hyperbole, grandstanding, over-statements, dramatics are supposed to induce that.

      I think he meant Seven

maybe you should get your collective asses on there
      or maybe everyone

@GB - you're gonna end up with every noob that has ever even heard of Quake pounding IRC (lol). I can see it now.

~"Lord Havoc how do you start Darkplaces?"
      -"Lord Havoc what is QC?"
#"Lord Havoc can you send me a Darkplaces for free?"
*"Lord Havoc is there a way I can play Quake in your engine?"
      more of this

      later that day......
LH - "GB you tell one more damn person to come find me on IRC and I'm gonna fuggin kill you!"

LordHavoc sightings are rare like a 4-leaf-clover. He can only operate in secret lairs and GB just told everyone where the batcave is.

But in all seriousness, if all the DarkPlaces peoples were to suddenly go there I think eventually LH would be miserable.

I can't even see myself really using IRC except in an "emergency". In the last 2 years I have found (figured out) every single solitary answer I have ever needed, without it. all I need is:

          1) a brain - check
          2) a couple good friendly contacts like GB (in a pinch) - check
          3) a browser - check

I hate bugging people for answers. I usually wait til it seems that there is simply no other way I'm gonna find them (figure it out). I actually only ever had 1 question for LH and I think I figured it out. Plus, I am the grand editor. I never get what I want to say out in one take. Real time + me != efficient for others.

I'm probably still gonna get IRC though and just let it run infinitely - fill my brain with pro talk.

          edit: (lol)

I have my thoughts, but I don't want to argue them because gb is rather correct.

            So ....

            Last comment on this ...

The reason that forums work well for me personally is that I feel like I have the time to think through and carefully reason what I'm going to say. On IRC, I feel the need to respond immediately to even the most irrelevant thing directed to me.

That being said, the particular IRC channel in question (#qc) really is quite different and I know it has some fascinating conversation.

I believe I share your dilemma. I'm gonna use a completely different name and watch the show. Not that I think very many (maybe any) people are gonna be asking me anything, but if they did, it could become a mess in a real time situation.

real-time? if only irc actually was. its more like a multi-way conversation over sms, just with less abrieviations.
most people idle a lot, so its quite rare to get an instant response.
