  • Powerups in CTF

    Lets talk about the powerups. I think we have all been so use to the current state of powerups. Why is quad really the only one thats used or thought about.


    I think Pentagram should be used and added into more of the maps. But instead of it granting invunerability, it acts as Quads counter part. It grants 30 seconds of 1/4 damage. So someone with quad shooting someone with pent, would equal the same damage as 2 normal people.

    Eyes/invisibility - I think this really should render the person INVISIBLE. no eyes or any bullshit. Just complete invisibility for 30 seconds. If thats deemed too powerful then make it full invisibility unless hes shooting/grappling, then they come back out but go back invisible when they stop. People would use eyes more, to sneak in the others bases.

    I think these 2 would add a little more flavor and strategy to CTF.

    I really like the Pentagram idea, but on the other hand if a Quadder gets his hands on it then the entire opposing team is pretty much fucked.

    As for the eyes, they're actually pretty useful. I would say it's more likely the players who use them aren't utilizing them correctly. I often use eyes to get into a base or sneak up on a guy who's controlling an area and it works beautifully. How often does invisibility spawn? whenever I run around it seems like it rarely pops up, and when it's not there, I don't see anyone using it.

      Don't worry about inevitable "buts", that shit's bound to happen, hell, I'll TRY to be the one to get both haha, that's the game, pent doesn't even last long, I have no problem with using it.

        How about only allowing one powerup? If you have one powerup and pick up another it disables the original powerup?

          or one power up center of the map or 1 per team.. ?

          I had an early mod with x2 quad and 1/2 damage pent, but then people complained about it. For ewyes how about a "preditor" like glass effect

            How about.... no power-ups. Actually play capture the FLAG instead of capture the quad.

              I think quad is a good idea because it is the one thing that can help turn things around. If you have two teams of equal skill and one is up by 60 points it's very hard for the other team to get back into the game without quad.

              How about rune type powerups, but not ones that last as long as you stay alive. I think a timer based system like Quake3 would be a cool. You grab resist and it lasts for 20-30 secs and goes away. They wouldn't be randomly thrown around the map like old school CTF, but would be placed in certain locations.

              I dunno, I always thought runes were kinda of gay, but I think it would add an extra element being that everyone in the game is fairly good nowadays.

                I don't really see why we're trying to constantly change the game, CTF isn't flawed.

                I would say new maps need to be created if anything, the gameplay is absolutely perfect.

                We've been running the ctf1/capturephob/elder(sometimes)/warzone(big games) rotation.. if we can add a few more really solid maps it would really help the quality of games.

                  I've always wondered why we just don't leave pent and eyes on? I think it would be fun to have pent on when we play 2m8, or 2m1. As of late we've been playing several different maps, pig remix, a couple of maps papasmurf fixed up just to name a few.

                    Im not trying to change the system i just want to use it like it was meant to be used.

                    We have changed the system by not allowing pentagram and runes.

                    Original CTF used runes. - But this is for another thread, i dont feel like trying to argue the runes argument.

                    All im saying is lets allow pent back into the maps its on and maybe add it to some of the custom maps. If it is deemed too powerful because it is not really the opposite of quad, then lets make it quads counterpart and you take 1/4 of the damage.

                    If a team can time it and get both then thats what control is all about so more power to them. If you cant manage to get powerups then your not going to win. It works that way now with quad.

                      I don't have a dog in a CTF discussion because I don't really like CTF and extremely suck with the Threewave hook,

                      But for other stuff, I'd certainly like to see REAL invisibility where the player is shown temporarily if they are taking damage.

                        Keep the game simple

                        One of the reasons I love Quake1 (especially CTF), and rarely play any other games, is that it is simple. Why are we looking to change the game, when after 10-11 years, people are still playing it? Are you guys finally bored? And do you really think this is going to help the game? or make it worse?

                        I'm definitely a proponent to keeping the game as simple as possible. I'm with Spoon here in saying that it should not be about Capture the Quad and it should be about Capture the flag. (Quad should still be used since we're all used to it), but i'm even up for taking that out of the game and playing straight CTF (no powerups).

                        We used to use runes and pent and eyes, but people later realized that it takes more skill (and is more fun) if it's an even playing field and that one powerup doesn't give the advantage against other players. It may help weaker players in games, but honestly, to keep the game at its highest level is to keep the playing field even. It's already hard enough to keep track of when Quad is respawning and controlling that one powerup. Now it'll be even harder if we have more powerups and then add runes and eyes to it.

                          Eyes is on a 5 minute timer, just like Pent. Another idea for a powerup is a Regen powerup ala Quake 3.
