  • QuakeCon

Never knew about this event and just happened to stumble on it at id software's website.

That’s right! It may be winter outside, but it’s time to start planning that summer vacation to the ultimate multiplayer gaming event and party – QuakeCon 2007. We’re locked and loaded for August 2-5, 2007 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, TX, and we’ve got more gaming, events, exhibits and fun planned than ever before.

QuakeCon is a FREE event. There are no registration, entry or tournament fees. However, you must pre-register if you wish to obtain a BYOC spot.

    REGISTER HERE

This year’s 12th Annual QuakeCon BYOC Area will cover 70,000 square feet of floor space and 2,700 player spots – over 1,000 more seats than 2006. The 25,000 square feet exhibit area, will be enough to accommodate up to 50 exhibitors demonstrating their latest games and computer hardware. Of course, it wouldn’t be QuakeCon without our high-stakes pro gaming tournaments; and attendees can also look forward to the return and expansion of our enormously popular and one-of-a-kind “Quick Draw” tournaments, which pit randomly selected attendees against each other in high-pressure battles for serious cash. And in keeping with QuakeCon tradition, every day will be packed full of contests, conferences, announcements, and entertainment.

Join #quakecon on irc.gamesurge.net, prior to registration opening to partake in the countdown party and to talk with staff members and other attendees during the fun of registration night! Visit www.quakecon.org for updates and more information.
Often described as the “Woodstock of Gaming,” QuakeCon was created in August of 1996 by a group of friends on the IRC network’s EFnet who had a desire to meet in person. Less than 100 attendees gathered at the Best Western in Garland, Texas that first year to play and talk games and compete in the first QuakeCon tournament. id Software’s lead programmer John Carmack and several other id team members stopped by to chat with fans about DOOM, QUAKE, and the future of an up-and-coming id Software.

Going into its 12th year, QuakeCon remains true to its original mission as an event created by gamers, for gamers. Sponsored by id Software and other industry-leading software and hardware manufacturers, QuakeCon continues to be run by more than 230 volunteers. Thousands of people from 52 countries around the world attend QuakeCon anually, and the event has expanded to include QUAKE®, QUAKE II®, QUAKE III Arena®, QUAKE III: Team Arena™, Return to Castle Wolfenstein®, DOOM 3®, QUAKE 4® and ENEMY TERRITORY: QUAKE WARS®.

Well, those events don't even care about the original Quake in any significant way and to me all the other Quakes (2,3,4) pale compared to the real Quake so -- well -- QuakeCon doesn't interest me at all.

Hehe, this site that tracks earthquakes in California probably has more to do with Quake than QuakeCon does:

        http://www.quakefinder.com

I am also proud to say that I have visited QuakeFinder.com 1 more time than I have visited the QuakeCon site.

Guess how many times I've visited the QuakeCon site and guess how many times I plan to visit it in the future?

QuakeCon remains true to its original mission as an event created by gamers, for gamers
Created by gamers for gamers, heh Well, I've never been too interested in what gaymers play.

Gamer = someone who will play anything with no standards as to what they play (Quake 2 and Quake 4 were designed for these people, heh ).

Quake = a game that has rightfully earned a time tested following for a variety of different reasons including intense deathmatch, the easy ability to mod the game, commitment to open source and tools for very creative single player.

Jehar, who though is one of your loathed Quake2 players with no taste whatsoever (despite also being an avid Doom and Quake player) attended last years QuakeCon and seemed to find it to be quite palatable to all Quakes, and didnt get told off when he gave his not so positive opinion on Quake4 - to Todd Hollenshead of all people.

Canadian, Im surprised you didnt know about QuakeCon, its very old, the original being Carmack talking about the game outside of a hotel a few guys were staying in and buying them all pizza.

That is what goes down at QuakeCon, a lot of lan playing of all Quakes, lots of caffeine, and conversation with everyone (Jehar spoke with Kevin Cloud for quite a while, as well as various industry and community people).

From what he told me, the reason Quake1 was less represented there, was because none of its supporters showed up, it would be a Q4 fest, but the Q3A and Q2 players still go to it. And they werent hostile to the idea of getting some more Q1 love in there.

It will take support from major players of iD software or QuakeCon organizers.
They cant expect Quake1 gamers to just show up and expect a slot in QuakeCon for Quake1,and play for the "sheer fun of it". We do that every day/night from the comfort of our own home.

With promotional support for Q1 in QuakeCon, it could cause a surge of new players in Q1.

In all honesty, combining Q2,Q3A,and Q4, I bet over 75% of the community's of all those Quake's have never played Q1. The reason I say this and have such a high % figure,is because of the age-gap. there are tons of Quake4 gamer who purchased Q4 or got Q4 for christmas , etc .... who are the age that some or most of us was when we got Quake1. I was 16 when I got the demo, and 16 later when I got the full version.

I think youre missing the point of a convention, particularly one where the developers are present as well.

Yet the attitude in this thread indicates youd rather be pessimistic and dismiss the whole thing, which started as being just Quake and has expanded but can still contain it, rather than actually making a move forward.

You were 16 when you started playing Quake, which means you were 17 when Quake2 came out, and 19 when Quake3 came out. Quake4 is a new game. It is ridiculous to think that because of someones age, they found their way into Quake2 or Quake3 without having exposure to the original Quake, theyre simply close together in age. Back in the days of just Quake, it had a huge number of players, because there wasnt really another game for multiplayer to go for - it just happened to be excellent as well. Quake2 came out, and a lot of people preferred it and made the switch. Then Quake3 came out, and a lot of Q2 people preferred it, and a lot of Q1 people preferred it, and they switched. Nevermind other games in this time period (namely HL). Youre also presuming that people cant play other games... I have the first 3 Quakes installed on my pc and patched up to date. I have the original Half Life and patched up to date. I have numerous other games. And I play them when I am in the mood for that specific game, or if someone invites me to play.

Could you afford a trip to Dallas for multiple days and to transport your computer as well, the price for a hotel and food when you were 16? Dont worry about the new people playing Quake4, most of them wont show up, for the fact that time of the event isnt perfect for everyone, nor is the overall costs.

Youre letting yourselves be discouraged from something that is almost as old as Quake itself, for the smallest reasons you can find, when in reality its not that it is "tainted" or some "n00bfest" that plays "gay games", more than likely its the money. Thats why Ive never gone. Im poor, and dont know of anyone who would spot me the funds for such an event (as opposed to helping me with life necessities along the lines of bills).

From what Ive heard, Q2 and Q3A are the dominant games there, because their fans quite simply give enough of a fuck to go (the percentage of fuck required is at least 20%, if you are low on fuck, make fun of a Counter Strike player and they will offer you some of their fuck), and they have a blast. Go if you want to, go in with some friends to split the cost and make sure they like Quake and you will have others to play it, and others to convince others (if they even need it, its not like theyre not familiar with the original anyways).

I know Jehar, who is mostly a Q2 player but is always up for Quake (shmack02 and rocketquake coop usually) is going this year, as he attended this year, and actually is trying to raise money for a Quake Expo booth at this one (booth costs are $2500).

I was 12 when I started playing Quake, now Im 22 and approaching 23, and I still cant afford QuakeCon, and thats the only thing stopping me, not some lame excuses to avoid what can easily become a massive Quake event (and it already is in some extents if you stop being an elitist about playing other games - which will make others more open to your preferences as well).

Now allow me to become less popular

It was created by Quake fans back in 1996, and theyve kept it alive while also being inclusive. You know, like Quake Expo which is open to Q2 and Q3 due to their extensibility and franchise relations.

Because... Quake2 isnt about to hit its 10th anniversary with a just as dedicated community, played by people who like its pace. And you know, Quake2 has never had a mod made for it either... And the lack of tools and the closed source! Someone should complain to id software! The same can be said of Q3A, which still persists with its fans, its own mods, its own tools (a majority of Quake mappers today make their levels in modified Q2/Q3A editors), it is open source and is around 8 years old now.

Quake is a wonderful game, and easily my favorite of all games - but the reasons you listed are hardly exclusive, and the only one that is even contestable is "intense deathmatch" which is a matter of opinion anyways. Quake has the best deathmatch in my opinion, but if youve never played an intense deathmatch in Q2 or Q3A, either youve got Always Run off, or youre playing some dull people.

And if you do honestly give at least a little of a fuck, and have a checking account, you can dontate to the QExpo booth through Jehar. His site, with a donate link is here, http://jehar.tastyspleen.net/ it can be found on the right under the various other links.

Dont worry, I know his name and where he lives, if he screws you over I can feed him to Shub.

You don't even need a real opponent to have an intense deathmatch in Quake 3...
