  • Show Your Beginner Maps Here

Phenom showed me a small first map he made (download) and looks just about the same as anyone else's first map. It's boxy, not well lit and you can tell he was just experimenting and there isn't that much to do there but that is how everyone learns.

I remember first discovering mapping at Func_Msgboard in August of last year and I had several newbie questions and felt out of place asking them, but received a great deal of starting advice from people like Metlslime, RPG and others.

I played around with mapping a lot back in August/September of last year, but then got busy and never had time to return to it and thought I never would.

However, I took some time and assembled all the information and advice I got from these distinguished map makers and consolidated it into a reference site:

Click on the Developer Tab for resources that pertain to mapping.

If you have not played around with Quake mapping, it is something very fun and enjoyable to do and will give you a great deal of insight of how things work in Quake and also, to some degree, how they work in other games.

Lately Spirit assembled a nice little site with several Quake textures sets (WADs) at http://wads.quaddicted.com

If you are interesting in playing around with the concept of making a map and don't know where to get started, some helpful links:

    Thread: Making a Map 101

The above should be enough to get started but to really get a grasp of how things really work in mapping, the Mapping Help thread and other discussions at Func_Msgboard are invaluable.

If you haven't thought about trying your hand at making a Quake map, it is not so hard. The following page has a WorldCraft 1.6 tutorial and making simple boxy maps is easy.

In fact, if you do the entire WorldCraft 1.6 tutorial completely, you will very quickly get a handle on mapping plus there are map source files indicated in the Quake Navigator for some very nice maps made by veteran map makers which can provide a great deal of insight on how certain structures are made.

IRC help is also available at:

    irc://irc.quakenet.org/terrafusion Mapping Help
irc://irc.anynet.org/darkplaces <-- those guys seem to know everything, heh, even about mapping too

Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

I made a medium size castle map, called Nosferatu. It was boxy I guess, I tried to make it not too boring. I didn't know how to fit textures to brushes yet, but at least I knew how to teleport monsters in. To me, it was a great map, but only because I made it. It ran pretty crapilly, but that was mostly because of all the leaks I have in it. I don't even know how I made all the leaks, but a lot of people all told me it was because I used the carve tool when I was making doors. For the archietectural stuff, I used mostly prefabs and I made a few things myself. When I discovered how fucked up the map really was, I just lost interest in mapping and decided that it took up too much of my time. So, I stupidly deleted the map off of my computer.... Wish I could share it with you guys and I still had the map so I could at least have another starting point if I wanted to attempt to make another map. Many other people couldn't even get it to run on their computers. I got 40-60 fps on it, but other people got 10-35. People on terrafusion also said that it was way too hard. I can agree with them, but to me the level was a piece of cake. They must not know the shambler dodging-technique. So I removed some (about 20-30 out of 100) of the monsters and they still said that the gameplay was very fucked up. I don't know if they were just playing with my head or what.

Probably the worst mistake I had ever done was deleting the map. Now I would have to start over from scratch trying to make single player maps again.

IRC terrafusion didn't really help me much. (i'm monster_6 on IRC if anyone watns to know) A lot of the times, they would just say, get out noob. or something along those disrespectful lines.

If a map is great to you, it does not mean it is good at all. Especially when it is one of your first attempts to build a map, it is most likely bound to suck. Judging from your description it sucked. And judging from the build process you described, you should be happy to have to start from scratch because you can avoid making the same mistakes again.

The guys at func/terrafusion are nothing but serious. If you come with a map that totally sucks and if you are just a retard who did not read any tutorials and such and if you ask annoying questions... Well, I guess it's clear what kind of answers you'll get? I made that experience myself.

#terrafusion can be hard to get into at times, most of us have been in that same channel for the best part of a decade now so there is lots of playful poking and hazing that can seem overly harsh to someone not used to it.

On the subject of your map though, do you remember the filename? If you put it up for download and some people from func_msgboard downloaded it then it is likely still hanging around on one of their computers...let me know the name and I'll try and track it down for you.

I think it was nosf.bsp. Thanks a ton for the offer, I hope you find it somehow!

I might have let RenegadeC download it...

I find #terrafusion hard to be in and Ive been around just as long, and Im friends with several people in there. Func_msgboard is much easier going I think (and I read it regularly).

I never finished maps I started, but they generally looked semidecent once I got past the prefab stage. I oughtta take another stab at it.

I lost most of my early stuff (pre Recurrent Rumours http://www.quaddicted.com/component/...nload/gid,619/) in a HDD crash.

              Probably just as well

Interaction on func_ has it's own rythm, best to sit back and watch for a while, use the resources mentioned/contained therein, then dive in when you think your up to speed. I was welcomed warmly back in the Qmap days. I was also hazed (by some now good friends) with regards the start map to Aard's first 100b...all well meant as it turned out.

I would like to try to build a map off of one of ID's maps, primarially adding a secret room or adding an extrenion to the map.
