Phenom showed me a small first map he made (download) and looks just about the same as anyone else's first map. It's boxy, not well lit and you can tell he was just experimenting and there isn't that much to do there but that is how everyone learns.
I remember first discovering mapping at Func_Msgboard in August of last year and I had several newbie questions and felt out of place asking them, but received a great deal of starting advice from people like Metlslime, RPG and others.
I played around with mapping a lot back in August/September of last year, but then got busy and never had time to return to it and thought I never would.
However, I took some time and assembled all the information and advice I got from these distinguished map makers and consolidated it into a reference site:

Click on the Developer Tab for resources that pertain to mapping.
If you have not played around with Quake mapping, it is something very fun and enjoyable to do and will give you a great deal of insight of how things work in Quake and also, to some degree, how they work in other games.
Lately Spirit assembled a nice little site with several Quake textures sets (WADs) at http://wads.quaddicted.com
If you are interesting in playing around with the concept of making a map and don't know where to get started, some helpful links:
Thread: Making a Map 101
The above should be enough to get started but to really get a grasp of how things really work in mapping, the Mapping Help thread and other discussions at Func_Msgboard are invaluable.
If you haven't thought about trying your hand at making a Quake map, it is not so hard. The following page has a WorldCraft 1.6 tutorial and making simple boxy maps is easy.
In fact, if you do the entire WorldCraft 1.6 tutorial completely, you will very quickly get a handle on mapping plus there are map source files indicated in the Quake Navigator for some very nice maps made by veteran map makers which can provide a great deal of insight on how certain structures are made.
IRC help is also available at:

irc://irc.anynet.org/darkplaces <-- those guys seem to know everything, heh, even about mapping too
