Smokey, 16 player CA games have happened a lot in the past couple of months. There have been a few times where there has been 20+ players playing CA (not all on the same server, of course).
Here is one from mid-July, there have been a number of them.
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.
So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...
Pretty much that's what it was, but just the sheer fact that all 16 players were in at one time was amazing. Thank god we were on Edge and not DM3 - THAT woulda been a bigger fragfest!
all a 4v4v4v4 would do is get me pissed. you die too fast. thats not what i call fun.
haha if you die too fast that means you suck!
Plus there's more to Quake than winning. Playing large CA games like that at bomber incorporate strategy. After you spawn you have 3 seconds to determine what to do. Should you stay where you are, which possibly is surrouned by several enemies? Do you move somewhere else? Where? Try to find teammates? Hide? It's pure fun.
For example, one green left so there were three of us, so we kept meeting in the basement (pillars) and killed people together as they ran in. It was a pretty good strategy, even though we never communicated to each other that we were going to do that, we just met there. (That's on that demo BTW, watch and you'll see us meet up at the pillars two or three times)
That's one of the reasons why I play a variety of mods - I seem to do really well at RQ, and I'm still learning CA so I'm not "great" but I do a decent job on there. I'll play CTF when offered, and occasionally I'll try RA, but I'm not very good at 1 on 1's (never really have been, either).

I usually look around, see that there's 3 enemies on the same team looking at me, and run away like the chicken I am in those 3 seconds
