  • Through the eyes of the client

I was plowing around in Q1 today and got to thinking, I have a very exacting config. setup to make it look the way I like, and I'm sure all of you out there have your own setups. So f12 away and lets see what you see.

Heres Q1 through my eyes. Totally not recommended for Deathmatching

I shrunk the size and bumped the contrast just enough to try and accurately represent what it looks like on my end. It's a very "Retro-Nouveau" appearance.

Run in 16-bit color mode for extra graininess, no texture filtering, bloom sample rate is 512 and darkened just a little. Gamma is 1.2. Dark, dark dark. but vivid!

Look, all of these mods make quake look really nice, and dark... really improve the original mood the creators intended. But the issue is you will never do well with your setup like this in a multiplayer environment. If I could I would, it looks really nice.

Amon is not competitive, he likes to look at the environment and admire the beauty of things. He does not play MultiPlayer.

Holy God the rain in the first pic is amazing! I never would have thought that area to be raining!

Qrack has this feature, R00k added it a few builds ago it eats your frames tho, not recommended for online play, but its still cool!

Looks cool, the only other Quake I know of with rain is the Saturn version.

looks cool Amon, i would suggest 24-bit color mode even if you want the grain of no texture filtering, simply because sometimes pixels dither into green spots which is not pure oldschool looks. I created that rain effect 95% from scratch, with one nice code example from MH that derives the midpoint of sky polys. From each midpoint i randomly calculate a point and spawn a rain drop.
It can be a bit labor intensive but most cards > geforce 5200fx can handle it.

Though Omi has point and Qrack can be config'd for both game-styles eyecandy for single player / demo playback, and bottom-line visuals for tweaked performance and competition.

I kinda have a mixed config, akin to q3 looks but nothing that will drop my fps below 120fps..
