Theres all sorts of optical illusions out there like this. A lot of it can be implemented into your playstle in games too.

For instance I was able to prove a long time ago that your reaction time and field awareness is cut in half if your crosshair is stationary for more than a second(the time it takes the average person to fixate their awareness and visual perception on a given point). A lot of people are suprised to hear this as many people would believe positioning your crosshair in a stationary position(which is what most do when focusing on an extreme angle or otherwise difficult shot of some sort hopeing the opponent will fall into the crosshair) would help. But in fact it will hinder your reaction time and sense of awareness gravely. Allow me to demonstrate:

Let the focal point of this picture represent your crosshair in-game. Let the dots around it represent your opponent(s), items, map architecture, or anything else that your mind has categorized as relevant in-game stimuli. Focus your eyes on the focal point(crosshair) in this picture. Within an average to 1 second(depending on the person) your awareness of the dots will instantly fade away and your reaction time will also be cut into anywhere between 50% and 25% efficiency. The second you look away the dots will reappear. So how do we avoid this nasty little effect in-game hindering us from solidifying key moments in a match? Keep either yourself or your crosshair in constant motion at all times. Its as simple as that, yet so many people do the exact opposite in key moments of their game or round and it often costs them the key frag to bring in the gold(because as we all know, one thing leads to another).

So long story short? Staring at crosshair is bad.
Intersting side note: you can train yourself for a faster response time and focus in-game by untold amounts by simply practicing a few quick excercises of racing yourself to see how fast you can make the dots dissapear and reappear within a given time period(say... about 15 seconds).

So for any of you hardcore FPS gamers out there(whether its Quake, CS, or whatever) hope I was able to shed some light on the subject and how a good number of some of my reflex tips can bring your game up when it matters most.
