F*cking nice but to much of that shiny shit needs more detail.

well since u are asking for opinions. i think that looks horrible and doesnt fit the model, and has random repeating parts, and looks blatantly garbled... please don't get offended its not meant to be. i appreciate the effort you put into ripping a lot of skins but you have to realize when something looks this bad.

Starting from a source screenshot that doesn't look like crap would have been a start. Overbright luminosity looks like shit. Clipping brightness to all white looks as awful as clipping audio to a flat waveform sounds.

If i was the developer of a game and u came to me with this shit, I'd fire u on the spot.
            JK.
Those pictures are poor quality kinda like one of those videos, there is the UFO but the video is of the poorest quality and the UFO is just scratches on the film.

you arent a developer...im not getting paid.

my goal was to get rid of the giant gerbil and replace it with the doom3 hellknight.

I was trying to share something that i know makes the game look more realistic and scary.

lol, now you no talent haters get what you deserve.

Sorry, but it doesn't do it for me either. Firstly, it's just too much of a change to one of the iconic Quake monsters for it to be acceptable. Secondly, it seems to be wandering into the territory of "high-res bumpy specular shiny stuff is always better, no matter what", which is just not the case.

For what it's worth, I prefer and use the classic ID Shambler skin. Yes, it's low-res, yes, it doesn't have all the bumpy-specular-shiny stuff, BUT. It has no eyes. It has big teeth (all the better to EAT you with!) It has HUGE bloodstains around it's mouth. It has HUGE bloodstains all over it's claws. The white fur really accentuates those bloodstains.

This one just looks out of place. Full marks for effort, full marks for execution, and I'm not going to knock you on those. But the end result in the context of Q1 just looks WRONG.

Edit to add: I see from reading your posts better that you don't like the look of the original. That's fine, nobody said you had to. But please try to remember that your opinion of something does not apply to everyone else. I haven't seen anyone else complaining about the "giant white gerbil" for example. In fact most people love the Shambler. So yeah, maybe it's a better result for you and is what you want for yourself, and if so that's cool. Nobody's going to say that your own preferences are wrong or bad, what's being said is that they're just not the same as other people's.

                One other thing:

If you ask for an opinion, don't be shocked and offended if you get one. Likewise if you put work up for public criticism, don't be shocked and offended if people criticise it. I actually thought haze_the_great was being quite diplomatic and helpful. He could have just said "yah boo, your skin sucks" but he didn't". Read over his post again, and read over your reaction, preferably after giving yourself some time to simmer down.

seanstar, could you upload the base texture somewhere ? I would like to try it with my engine and take some screenshots if the result looks good to me.

I don't know if you noticed, but being a jackass to mh is a bad idea.

Also, for good measure, I pretty closely recreated your bumpmap using only photoshop filters and no drawing. Then you just fed that bumpmap into a normal generator. I didn't try it, but I'm also completely sure that you created the luma using the same method of only applying filters in photoshop.
That's some pretty trite, amateurish bullshit.

Oh, I don't mind. To be honest, I have far too many good things and more important things going on in my life to be anyway upset or annoyed by one post on an internet forum.

What I would hate to see is a talented and creative contributor get the hump in a bad way over negative feedback for one skin he's done. We all get negative feedback for things from time to time, and we deal with it, move on, and end up producing better stuff as a result. I just think seanstar's reaction is a little - shall we say - extreme. Not just in this thread, but taking down the links to the other stuff he's done in other threads too. That's a bizarre way to react and doesn't reflect good.

Of course it's his work and he's entitled to do with it as he pleases, would never dispute that. But he has been doing some good stuff and he has been contributing well, so I'd like him to see that negative feedback can be meant well and can be a good thing to happen too.

You could always just not release your work. For example, I just finished whipping up a nice Hexen 2 source port from only the official source code release, all in one day. As much as I would like to release it, my code looks like utter shit and achieves a lot of things through messy hacks. Thus, I'm not going to release it, since that would also entail releasing the source, which would be plain embarrassing.

It's not a big deal to me because I was never planning on releasing it. It was created for personal utility and for close friends. Likewise, you shouldn't be posting things up on the internet and throw a tantrum when people criticize you. I know I don't want to put up with it, so I don't even try.

I also decided not to release some skins of mine, some things look better the way they are.

(to achieve that wet-glass look of skin use gloss map instead of diffuse texture)

Guys don't be hard on our new fella...
