That's the QMB particle engine, written in OpenGL/C...
if you can convert it to a shader script that would be cool!

      i want that too!

qmb, vr2, qrack, even the old telejano have beautiful particle based fire effect. it's sad that darkplaces, as the most advanced q1 engine today, has still that ugly torches. i know there is a mod that replaces mdl fire with sprites. it looks better.. ok., but is it pretty? no way! while making my own effectinfo.txt i learned a lot about particles in darkplaces and i know that dp can handle really complex particle effects - like mine hell knight's attack. i wanted his magical sword attack to look like fire and i'm quite satisfied with the result. if only there was a special effect_name for torch fire...
      my projects so far:
      Travail retextured
      Tronyn in high definiton
      Ab
      yss of Pandemonium HD textures
      Nehahra rtlights and other experiments

That's not entirely true. Darkplaces does them beautifully, but you need to change some .qc to get it to work. It wasn't all that invasive. The problem more or less, for most people is: is it doesn't do that "out of the box".

Seven has done it for the id1 + the mission packs. Sure not the exact same fire effect you are seeking however close:
