  • QRack "Fun Pack"

I made a fun skins pack for QRack. Basically for each different pants color, a different skin is used.

A "fun" skins pack for QRack I threw together. Makes things more interesting.

I noticed imperfections with a couple of the skins, not going to worry about it that much right now. Just wanted to experiment.

Unzip this pak to c:\quake\qrack and rename it to be the last pak file in your c:\quake\qrack folder.

Example: If you already have a pak1.pak, name this pak2.pak. Or if you already have a pak2.pak, name it pak3.pak and so forth.

    To use:

    cl_teamskins 1

Most of the skins are by Alan Yen

    http://hosted.planetquake.gamespy.com/qgallery/

Basically, each player pants model uses a different skin:

Download: QRack Fun Skins Pack 0.50 (0.6 MB)

A couple of the skins are a little misaligned and I know why, I'll fix it later ... Yellow or someone can make something better. I just wanted to experiment with the idea.

Correct the misalignment issue and updated file.

A lot of those skins were used with the Omicron bots.

Nice certainly different and adds a bit of humour chasing after a mountie, stormtrooper to name a few

Just to echo Jack's comment, nicely done Baker. I used these on RG's coop mod last night and, in between hiding behind Jack holding his coat and 'fountaining' myself in Peg's Vortex's, it made a nice change. I used skins before in the old 'multiskin' mod which was fun but with the eyecandy of Qrack these look pretty good. Before I got ahead and mak one, is there a key somewhere detailing which skin applies to which number?

Anyway a big pat on the back for Baker.

          Kind regards

Just use the color table, say, from QuakeTerminus as a guide:

            http://www.quaketerminus.com/console.htm

I tried to make every color correspond to the actual color. So color 0 = some white skin, color 4 = some red skin, 3 = green skin.

If you open up the pak file, you will see player_0.png and player_4.png where the number corresponds to the color.

There are a ton of QuakeWorld skins at:

            http://www.gamers.org/pub/idgames2/g...skin_textures/

And I just dug thru those to find ones I thought might look good. It's not too hard to make, just remember to open them in an editor and make them PNGs (QRack might support PCX but I wasn't going to waste time experimenting, PNG is an internet friendly format anyway).

It's a slow format, though.TGA is much faster. The seed is gernerally limited to the speed of the I/O system (generally hard drive speed). PNG is about 3 times slower. Most engines that support replacement skins support TGA and PCX.

PNG is small enough on disk, its terrible slowness comes from the satanic libpng loader. I don't know if the format is horrible and hard to decode, or if the loader is just terrible, but PNG is a big no-no in games.

This stuff you and LardArse may be true, but isn't the problem with new games that they take a decade to load the map and all the models.

Last year I played a lot of games of Q3: Urban Terror with Mindz, Hydro and Yellow and I swear I got bored to tears on a map change. Seemed like forever.

Also: I have more thoughts on this conversation for later. I have a nice program I wrote that takes a texture set, like, the Quake Retexturing Project and smashes the size down (230 MB ---> 5 MB) employing dirty tricks. Those PNG sets load like lightning.

Well, if it's only 5 MB, I guess regardless of format it would load quick

I agree about loading times though. Hate 'em. Length is not the only problem, I hate frequent loading too. Like if I played Half-Life again, it would probably load in less than a second, but there's a load around every corner. Still annoying.

Then you have your freak children, like HL2's very frequent and very long loading times... (although I'm not sure what could have been done to make it any faster, except for having crappier textures, which would have made Half-Life 2 look like Wolfenstein 3D)

That might have made HL2 a better game...
