There are 2 possible ways for Doom 4.
-It will be Doom game and 90% of both critics and new-school players will bash it heavily, it wont outsell top modern FPS games and Bethesda will quit any possible Doom game in the future.
-It will use modern FPS games formula, old school fans will abandon the game, but it will probably be more successful.
But in both cases, the game has already half-damned future, because of high expectations and widely known development problems, so I dont expect it to outsell those Battlefield, Call of Duty games. EA and Activision have safely created the environment in which no other game than their franchises to be successful.
Don't deny the plausibility of random acts of sheer genius. It's happened before, lightning CAN strike twice in the same spot. It's very rare though sure, I'll give you that....

EA is a publisher over all now days, thats it. A vehicle for a game developers such as CryTek,to get their games into your hands. All they have to focus on is developing the game....EA publishes it when ready (or sometimes, NOT ready haha).
EA says make me money now. Don't got my money?Release that shit now please, bugfix as you go!
The most important is that Doom WITHOUT non-linear levels with dozens-hundreds of demons, without secrets places and fast non-interrupted gameplay, wont be Doom.
John Carmack got up in front of everyone and said something like, "Doom means two things: demons and shotguns."
If they listen those wise words it cannot go wrong...
Another comment of wisdom:
These are all the things I want in Doom IV:
-Big, wide open environments that encourage exploration.
-Fast, solid shooting mechanics. No weapon limits!
-Competent AI.
-Loadsa demons to shoot.
-Easy mod support.
That is all. No RAMIREZ DO EVERYTHING mission objectives. No pointless scripted events. No "start taking us seriously guyz!" storyline. Just good old shooting demonic stuff
I really do not follow some other comments like this one:
I love id, but I don't think they have the talent or the design philosophy to compete in a modern genre of shooters. We are no longer doing corridor shooters, we are now in the generation of Bioshock Infinite and other similarly complex, emotional and compelling stories, characters and game worlds.
WHAT? I want to shoot stuff! I play adventure games for the emotional story! ("A whispered world" comes to my mind) I play First person shooter for shooting stuff (Quake anyone? )

If Id wanted "Doom 1" to have a massive extensive story, they could have. There were games out way before Quake and Doom that had great/fantastical stories but Id didn't choose to go that route for whatever reason. They wanted to produce a fully 3D environment which pushed boundaries and focus on the "weird things in Quake".
Id seems like they jump around between "The story kinda matters" and "the story doesn't matter" in their games. for example Look how much story rage had compared to Quake 4 (I know it's an odd comparison), there's just not enough there to make a fully fledged awesome story if you packed all Doom 1,2,3-Quake1,2,3,4 into a single game and then STILL had to focus on making an awesome story for it all. These games aren't meant for story if you want a story go read a book!
That's what I enjoyed most about Doom. You didn't really get answers or an explanation you got thrown into "Hell" and weren't even expected to survive as a matter of fact the invasion continues after you win! (Doom2 & 3...again?) though t hey are in separate universes I think. I can't remember what any of the NPCs said in Doom 3 nor do I remember their faces. I remember slaughtering hellspawn and feeling like a badass NOT a member of the "Collin's family"<-Twilight reference).
I want Doom 4 to explode on impact and not stop exploding until Hell itself is destroyed by my hand.. The Story? I am the ULTIMATE BADASS! The End.
To be clear I also like deep stories, but in FPS gameplay comes first. I have no problems with leaving around logs of other characters; torn pages of newspapers giving you clues of what happened; and maybe even some intrigue in the back. BUT gameplay first and, please, no "explainers" when I want to think about the story I will read everything and try to make connections, like a detective... heck, I remember I was fascinated by Doom level names and try to make a sense from it.

I was thinking more a completely new game. Hell and daemons are not copyrighted! Starting from some engines (example: irrlicht for graphics, bullet for physics, OpenAL for sound, ...) with the wonderful community of artists writing monsters models, levels and sound should be indeed doable.
