So, I've got a week off college now and decided I'd do some gaming before I start working on a couple of projects of mine (a sidescrolling horror game which I'm just using as an excuse to make a 16:9 port of megaman 2 with (C++/DarkGDK) and a quake social interface which will have a site up for it later in the year.)
So, I decided to boot up a game I've only even beaten once and haven't touched since, considering how it changed my perspective of 3D beat 'em ups so dramaticaly.
Devil May Cry.
Now, since I own all of the games I'm playing through all of them over the next few weeks, but on my first playthrough which was probably when I was about 9/10ish I really disliked a lot about the game. I found it clunky and slow.
It FELT like a Resident Evil game still.
But going back to it I've just really gotten to appreciate how nice and heavy feeling this game is. For example, take your basic sword attack. It has enough weight behind it to make you feel like you're bashing the enemy's head in. Something more recent titles can not. (This isn't just specifically Devil May Cry games.)
The music, was awesome, it wasn't mindblowing in any way, but I felt cool as I plowed my way through the hordes of demons. Like, I WAS DANT. I don't find a lot of games that give me that feeling.
The visuals, they were pretty generic, but it felt right.
I don't really know where I'm going with this. But if you want a good, challenging Beat 'em Up with horror themes you should definitely check this game out. You can get an HD port (which looks amazing) for the XBOX360 and PS3.
So, who else remembers it? I know it's not that old, but I haven't really heard anybody mention it. (Not that I expect a quake forum to have people talking about DMC on it.)
(If I had to give it a score, I'd say 6/10. It is far from a perfect game, but with a great atmosphere, and rewarding gameplay (which a lot of replay value if you are obsessed with getting 100%) I'd go into the flaws, but it's one of those games where I can look past them and see a really nice game.)
