• One unit Whole Blood Launcher

For those of you who have this game or would like to play it
one of the early build engine games with the good ole voxels

if you have OG shadow warrior and or Rise of the Triad - another great build game by 3d realms around the duke nukem 3d era you should love blood, sure most of you are already aware of it.

the GoG version works fine

go here One Unit Whole Blood - Launcher, Maps and Mods all packed into one and they have a launcher with which you can launch blood, its expansion cryptic passage, as well as most of the well known community map packs and mods for it they have guides to install it all, after an hour or so myself i managed to get it up and running fine

I even looked up a fix for making the game run faster at high resolutions, cant remember what, i think it involved updating dosbox and changing some lines in the blood.configs files but yea, either way it works good

I have it installed, its quite nice

pretty much everything is a click or 2 away , believe it comes with its own zblood, but its also got everything with the original blood powered by dosbox which is what most of the mods run in too not the "easiest" setup ive done, but it was worth it nonetheless, the game is a timeless classic

also is a thread in gog forums discussing this Launcher map/mod collection for Blood
the thread starter has a pretty definitive guide to installing it
One Unit Whole Blood Launcher (map & mod collection, too!), page 1 - Forum - GOG.com

Enjoy!

---------------------------------------------
Some bonuses for using this:
- a central place for all things OUWB (well, mostly, you still have to go through setup.exe for multiplayer hosting, but you can launch that from it), you can easily add it to Steam or a Dock software of your choice (like RocketDock for example) - running Blood with Plasma or Cryptic Passage is easy as pie,
- lets you jump straight to any episode and map via the interface (includes pictures of the levels to jog your memory in case you don't exactly remember which level is which anymore),
- includes over 700 custom levels, pre-configured map editor through dosbox, zBlood (Blood in gzDoom), YANG (you will however need to configure this yourself, but it allows online multiplayer) and includes a switch for overlay settings and fullscreen options,
- fixes some of the gog.com release music tracks by providing an alternative file set and includes the "Mark McWane" re-orchestration of the original midi music,
- is configured to a "modern" control scheme (WSAD, space is jump, e is open, mouseclicks are primary and secondary fire, has mouselook turned on at all times via the excellent bMouse),
- has a ton of modifications pre-configured so you don't have to worry about using .bat files to install mods, and you can just launch them via the launcher - all use bMouse as well,

------------------------------------------------

Important Note: You ARE required to have your own copy of Blood you will need the files from the installation (as the launcher doesn't come with the base game files included) , i strongly recommend the GoG version though (because it has music fixed to work and it is compatible on windows 7/vista/what have you) of course if you already have Blood ... You're Golden and all you have to do is download the launcher and follow their guides ,and you should have a whole library of custom mods and mappacks for OG one unit whole blood and its expansion

its only $2.99 on their site hell of a deal i say
http://www.gog.com/game/one_unit_whole_blood

and if you haven't heard the "One unit whole" Prefix to blood here's what that means

One Unit: Whole Blood is a special collection of Blood games that includes the original Blood(fully patched) as well as the Cryptic Passage and Plasma Pak expansions.

edit: i forgot , this launcher even comes with it's own editor, so you can make your own maps and levels for blood if you wished.

another superb classic from back in the days

shame the source of this game never got released
wouldve been great to be able to have updated clients for this game which support widescreen and remove the upwards-aim-limit,
and perhaps even support replacement textures and models and such

wouldnt it be awesome if we'd be able to have a sourceport like eduke32 for blood?

there is however the bloodCM WIP total conversion by M210
M210 Projects - Main
but its only half-complete and its just not the same as playing the original blood cuz it isnt 100% accurate,
and im curious if eduke32 even supports everything that would be needed to replicate everything thats in blood-maps accurately

i still hope that some day the source of blood gets released and we'll be able to have updated clients for the game

but untill then, just running it in dosbox works perfectly too.
to run it in hi-res, set the ingame resolution to 800x600 and then set resolution in dosbox config to your desired resolution.
just dun try raising the in-game resolution to higher then 800x600 cuz this will result in severe drop in framerate.

doing it the way i said instead will result in the game looking the exact same, but without the loss of performance
.
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?

Ah, neat trick with the resolution/performance talisa

I know right? Imagine it on a more modern port, with total free mouselook with no upward limit, it would be like zandronum, or eduke32 and with support of replacement textures, omg... that would be the coolest!!!!!!

yea good point.. if they released the SOURCE code , it would be amazing, then we could play it like the exact original game was! But in a way better port... with limit removing and extra features...

it would be absolutely epic lol

edit: I Heard a rumor that Monolith and 3d realms both have Lost the source code?

That would make me sad if it is true... well maybe someone miraculously locates it one day? lol we can dream right!

especially the re-orchestrated versions of the original midi tracks

they are VERY atmospheric haha

i love the dark carnival theme song especially lol

hmm as far as i know the problem with source mostly is the fact that the rights to the game are owned by atari i think.

but atari has gone bankrupt and jace hall, one of the creators is working to try and purchase the rights to blood so the source to be given free to the public
The Postmortem • View topic - Greetings to the Blood Community

so lets hope he can get the rights and the blood source can finally be released after all,
and the community can work on making an updated client for the game

.

also yeah i agree, blood had great atmospheric ambient music

also, talking about blood made me wanna go play it again

yeah just playing it now on extra crispy.
it is brutal indeed in difficulty, especially at the start of each episode when you'll barely have any weaponry yet

and you constantly end up without ammo and having to face enemies with your pitch-fork
which is insane... but its really rewarding if you do manage to do it

ive even had to take down the stone gargoyle-boss with just my pitch-fork
took me an hour or so of constant circle-strafing, but i did it in the end
.

haha! Totally understand that... yea and omg those little Hands that choke you, like thing from the adams family, and say "I'll swallow your soul!" in that chipmunk voice haha ,

hilarious!

yea if you can check out the blood launcher cause it comes with a heap of custom maps and campaigns , many are pretty well made, so that way u got fresh adventures when u finish playing through the original and its 2 expansions again (its been some months since i set up the launcher on my machine, almost forgot what i all had to do lol) and since they were all built in the days of DOS, at least they are accessible via the launcher interface, saves ya a good amount of headache yea , oh with open source we could see some amazing works of mapping with todays tools and ports, with textures and enhanced lighting and smoothed sprites

and theres an assload of them haha 700+ custom maps , some are standalones, some are campaigns yea

lol pitchforking the Cheogh boss that'd be pretty epic hahahah

rofl yeah those hands are f-ing hilarious. in blood2 they make a return and in there they sometimes turn upside-down and flip you off

i had to do that when i played the game out on extra crispy last time

reminds me btw i never finished the cryptic passage episode.
did play out all 5 other episodes but didnt finish that episode, dun recall why.
will have to try and play out that last episode too so that ill have finished the entire game

.

yeah all those things would be great with updated clients.

also bugs fixed would be great too, like that enemies seem to forget their target after loading a game.
just try it.... have an enemy chase you, hide behind a wall, and then save the game and load it. the enemy will stop coming after you.

also the bug where enemies can get stuck on edges of sectors sometimes can be annoying, and they end up running in place.

or the one where an enemy is chasing you and he will randomly turn around and go run in some completely random direction for no reason.

or more rare but happens.... flame-guy bug, where an enemy that you set on fire doesnt die but runs around endlessly
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgnTD3VvY6c[/ame]

or another rare one... if an enemy is rendered as a flat sprite (e.g. like how a painting is also rendered), instead of the sprite facing the player like normal

.

but even though those bugs its still an absolutely awesome game
but if the source gets released people could also fix those bugs in their updated clients

right on! yea some of those bugs are downright hilarious lol

yea sometimes the axe zombies would do that i remember they'd just kinda go run after one of the survivor people who are all scared and stuff.. or if you got too far from the zombie, yea it was like he'd lose interest and go in another direction lol

yea, with the bugs fixed though , it sure would be fantastic ( well it still is ,but can be improved yet!) but still totally playable haha , yep i need to play the plasma pak and cryptic through too...

and Gotta love all the 1 liners or quotes in the game from the Protagonist Caleb

game definitely has soul like duke 3d

and i always found the language the hooded cultists speak in to be utterly hilarious, love listening to them babble when im hiding around a corner or behind cover yea, ANAMA-DAKTHEIRDO! or something haha and lots of other stuff

the developers actually made their own kind of "language for the cultists"

and their screams when they die always entertaining lol

edit: funny didnt know the hands would flip you off in Blood II haha

havent got around to getting blood II + Nightmare levels yet

probably will when that new HD is hooked up though

but for now yea i can still have some fun and laughs in blood/cryptic/plasma

ah , 1 more thing if you get the loader, youll notice, for each blood mod/mappack

youll notice each one has its own folder and youll have to Set/tweak your resolution in each blood.config file for every mod... other than that small task, it works flawlessly when finally setup and what not

since you only have to tweak each config once and it saves it from then on

but that's no biggie really , not much different than having to set each Doom.config for like all your different doom 3 mods and stuff like when using sikkmod yeah

id save yourself the trouble of finding blood2...
sadly its horrible crap which is ridden with a bazillion bugs

and they changed a lot about the game. like its set in more modern times, and the settings are modern urban.

and instead of cultists you now fight business-men in suits

and soldiers with gasmasks which have machine-guns

and the zombies are now all super-slow and blind-folded and only slowly limb after you

and instead of a tommy-gun you get a pair of uzis which totally feel out of place in blood

blood2 is def nothing amazing, not at all.... especially compared to blood1.
it completely lacks most of the magic that blood1 had, and its completely ridden with a ton of bugs which really ruin the game

id say save yourself the cringing you'll experience while playing the horrible abomination named blood2, and just enjoy blood1
