  • GUNSCAPE: CREATE, SHARE AND PLAY YOUR OWN FPS (or remake an entire classic game ;) )

    Hi, we're working on a game that allows you to create old school fps levels and share them with your friends.

    I'm Simon =), I'm an artist working on this game at blowfish studios.

    I just want to say that we would really appreciate if you'd have a look at our game to see what you think. Your advice and opinions are highly welcome!

    Kickstarter.com

    You can find the project on steam green light where we need your support:

    Steamcommunity.com

    And if you want to support us even more, you could follow us on facebook and twitter:

    If you have any questions i can most probably answer you. Mostly i can answer art related questions

      Awesome, every noob (me too) will be able to build own map. I hope there will be very much moding possibilities, so i could make some old skool game with a amiga gfx look. Take a look at this video

          Windows, mac, and linux

          @Sza

          Indeed, i'd say you could even make a better one! we have game designer (radix) in our team, but I'd place my bets on the folks who are most passionate about quake to make the coolest old school maps

            What makes your program better/easier than simply using (ex) worldcraft and the Quake source to build games?

            The videos I've seen so far look like BSPs with model replacements and a couple non quake entities (like your arrow launch pad thing). I like your project but I don't understand how the results are any different than a lot of what is already going on here at QuakeOne. Can you elaborate on how GunScape differs in a positive way from the awesome tools we already have?

            Will GunScape allow me to host my creation on my own game server?

            How far will the modability go with GunScape? Much of what is here is open source even down to the engine code. Will GunScape allow me to compile my own games, possibly even changing GunScape?

            What language is this built in?

              Hmm... old skool would be very easy for me but new skool will take some more time for me. I am only good gfx designer... but i have played much amiga games where you can build own arenas frome a simple "lego" blocks. I think it was Alien breed 3d 2 killing grounds, fears, and gloom series.

              The idea with the level editor is very good. I have seen that even total noobs will be able to design a map so its even very danger situation for a games like the quake 1... i dont want to talk here about q2 because there is definitely not much players active.

              May be the game will be so good like the q live or even better. If there will be a map editor available it will be a very bad ass future. If yes the game will be a hard opponent for other mp games like this one. I mean it coul be even very danger for the ql.

                @MadGypsy

                That's a fair observation. We are aware of some of the other choices out there, which is why we are taking a slightly different route with our design. If you are looking for a more hands on and technical approach to designing maps and experiences for the player, those tools you mentioned are definitely the way to go, and you will have more control.

                What you get with gunscape is a more casual experience, allowing just about anyone to share and play a fun level no matter experienced you are. It was done by making the game design simple and classic. So theoretically if we get some interest on this, enough to build a community, there aught to be endless content. What's more, being as casual as it is you can include more of your friends in than you might if you tried to convince them to map with you. Speaking of which, you can map at the same time together. A bit like cube 2, but again, easy for anyone to create fun maps.

                It's like if you can imagine having a bet with your best friend over who can make the more challenging map, or create maps for your friends with in jokes.

                But you still have more power over the average player in making an awesome level, if you indeed know what makes an awesome level. Levels will be rated, so that the levels should generally range from good to awesome. There's the exception of some troll levels where people aim to make you rage, but those would collect at the bottom of the list

                Will GunScape allow me to host my creation on my own game server?
                I believe that levels are hosted on a big server, I'm not sure if this is permanent, but you can see for yourself we have a few for each big region.

                How far will the modability go with GunScape? Much of what is here is open source even down to the engine code. Will GunScape allow me to compile my own games, possibly even changing GunScape?
                So being an artist i'll try to answer with what i know from this side of things.
                It's kinda like what i said above, we work within Unity 3d so I'm guessing not for the time being. That being said, we are interested in what the community wants, and we're going to be extra careful to listen to anyone who wants to help us through the kickstarter. After all, it has been asked before whether there will be mod support.

                What language is this built in?
                For this one, all i can do is show you an excerpt from the wikipedia page on unity XD

                Scripting

                The game engine's scripting is built on Mono, the open-source implementation of the .NET Framework. Programmers can use UnityScript (a custom language with ECMAScript-inspired syntax, referred to as JavaScript by the software), C#, or Boo (which has a Python-inspired syntax).[10] Starting with the 3.0 release, Unity ships with a customized version of MonoDevelop for debugging scripts.[11]

                I'm probably not allowed to give out the game designer's contact, but you can create a discussion on the steam greenlight page where he frequently answers to comments. I can say his name is Glen!

                Nothing to fear my friend, if you can build things in just about any of those games, gunscape shouldn't be an trouble

                What a compliment yes, there is a map editor! it's called creative mode.

                EDIT:

                Alright, i'm a gib collector
