Is the Quake II version of Aerowalk still around? I've used Google but it comes up with only Quake III, CPMA, Quake IV and Quake Live versions.

Legally?
That "Quake II Kicker" thing seems kinda shady to me. The demo license says
2. Prohibitions. You, either directly or indirectly, shall not do any of the following acts:
(...)
g. disassemble, reverse engineer, decompile, modify or
alter the Software;
(...)
k. prepare or develop derivative works based upon the
Software.

Plus, you can play Q2 multiplayer completely for free, unlike Q1.
You just need the demo and the patch with the multiplayer maps.

I don't think you need any Q2 Kicker, whatever that might be. You only need the demo and the patch.
With Q1, I'm not sure if you can join any server with just the shareware version. ISTR this was not possible. Otherwise there wouldn't have been all these "Free Quake" attempts (legal and illegal ones).

the q1 demo refuses to load custom maps.
its lacking many models that would be required for online play.
so you're be limited to just episode 1, but you should be able to connect so long as the map is good.
the q2 patcher has to be bugged. that can't have been intentional...
